MFA advises Thais in India to return to Thailand due to Covid-19 situation

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has advised more than 1,000 Thais in New Delhi to return to Thailand due to the escalating COVID-19 situation in parts of India.

Mr. Thani Saengrat, Director-General of the Department of Information and MFA spokesman, said today the COVID-19 epidemic in India is still severe as there are shortages of hospitals, beds, medical personnel, antiviral drugs and oxygen. He advised Thai people in India to return to Thailand. In May, there are three special flights from India to Thailand. However, two of the flights are now fully booked. Thais in India can submit a request to return to Thailand by a special flight on May 22, by contacting the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi.

The Royal Thai Embassy in India and the MFA are ready to consider arranging additional special flights in the event of high demand. Currently approximately 1,000 Thais are in New Delhi and approximately 100 Thais are in the region around New Delhi.

There are no confirmed cases in Thailand, yet.

Lucky they're not Australians.

And hopefully, all the arrivals will be sent strait into proper 14 days quarantine yes? knowing the Thai government 'wisdom' when it comes to their own people they might just give them some test and let them loose unto their communities which will be big mistake...

but there were already 3 emergency royal air force flights to delhi, spanking new A340 with capacity up to 180 passengers.

They took back infected embassy workers.

some 4-5 passengers on each flight, at cost $100k each flight.

thai generals do know how to organise emergency situations, planning for those events is core of their training

Welcome home variants!!!

Until India ran out of vaccines, they were vaccinating older and at risk folks of other nationalities.  I know 3 older residents of India (not citizens), of various nationalities who've received 2 AZ jabs.  There didn't seem to be a "foreigner at the back of the line" attitude.

The indian virus is more dangerous than the British and mutated already in 3 different strings. It is uncertain if all vaccines will give enough protection according to the EU. So let the people come in and make a bigger disaster..

All incoming Thais are quarantined, have been from the start.

Quarantine rules are the same regardless of nationality. The only difference is that Thais can go into free state quarantine facility if they do nto want to pay for ASQ.

also for the indian mutation quarantine is 3 weeks (same, as an african, brasilian ones).

But those positive or with any symptoms are kept as long as needed.

it's not the quarantine mistakes, but illegal border crossings, which spread virus.

But at small border crossings corrupted immigration officers can falsify computer records, as was the case with thai workers at tachilek, who were escaping back to thailand at mae sai.

Don't forget the Thai/Cambodian border casinos which only closed down a couple of weeks ago.

Hi so types were regularly back and forth to these from Bangkok.  This is most likely how the UK variant reached Thong Lor, same demographic involved.

by contrast it is very, very hard for Cambodian migrants to sneak in and out these days. I know one who has been stranded in Cambodia for months trying.

Not until this lot arrive back home.

Australia has the right idea. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

if malaysia has already for many weeks 30% of infections from an indian mutation, than now it's surely came through the southern border.

all illegal thai in malaysia were allowed to come back home till 22.04. Yes, there were put into quarantine.

But how many of them left thailand illegally and decided to run back from a crackdown also illegally?

I hope they put them up in a quarantine facility !

I don't trust the honor system by letting them go home to self quarantine !
