Drownings off Huai Yang beach

At the southern end of Huai Yang beach, which is about 30 kms south of Prachuap Khiri Khan, there is a fishing village. Yesterday afternoon or evening, three young children from the same family, two girls and a boy, went swimming in the rough sea near the breakwater and the girls got swept away. Early this morning, the body of one child was found in the sea just east of the temple, about a kilometre north of where she entered the sea. Late in the morning rescue boats and divers were still searching for the second body.  RIP little girls.

Very sad. Some people do not simply understand the power of the sea. RIP to them and thoughts to the family. Nothing worse than losing your children first.  400 child drownings a year in Thailand again puts the 382 Covid-19 deaths into perspective.

That is if you believe the official stats, far better would be to look at excess deaths this year. But there is a big difference you can do something about drownings. You can teach kids to swim. In my country we had mandatory swimming lessons when i was young. Because there is so much water. We were taught to swim with clothes on.

You can teach kids and supervise, Covid is not something you can prevent and if you don't take measures the amounts of deaths will soar (look at Brazil and India). Once the healthcare system can't handle it deaths soar. If we had done nothing about covid no measures most countries would have Indian situations. Look at Italy where the health system also could not cope. That is the risk if you led it spread.

Anyway this is not about covid but drownings. I know many many Thais that can't swim. Its a major problem and even more of a problem if those that can't swim still go to the sea or canals. Especially without supervision.
