Planning on a motorbike ride from Kanchanaburi to Cha-am for a couple of days. Need recommends where to stay . Would like to be close to the beach. Not looking for high end, but no hostels either.

Drive to Cha Am early in the day.  Ride your motorcycle around the beach area in and near Cha Am to view some of the properties.  There are hundreds of available rooms in the area.  You can pull up Agoda or Booking dot com (same ownership) to get a better idea of where you might want to stay.

I-Calm Resort at the southern stretch of Cha-am Beach. It's directly opposite the beach and an easy walk to food outlets etc. About 1,200 baht per night for room with seaview including breakfast.
