The US has purchased and will donate 500 million doses of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine worldwide as it seeks to be a key player in getting other nations vaccinated, a person familiar with the move told CNN.

Around 200 million doses will go out in 2021 and 300 million will be distributed in the first half of 2022. Biden's top Covid adviser, Jeff Zients, has been working on the deal for the last month, a person familiar said.

All doses will go through COVAX, the international vaccine initiative, and will go to 92 low- and lower-income countries, in addition to the African Union.

America save the day!

well, save the World in fact.

I didn't post this to try and tout what the US is doing.  But I think this is an important step in getting us out of this pandemic.  The rich countries, with millions of vaccines giving to the poor countries with none.  This is what it will take for us to defeat this enemy!!!!

Russia is doing it, China, UK, etc.  Great stuff.  Finally, the US is doing it.  Via donations.

Donating more vaccines (500 million) than we've used (~ 305 million, to date) is definitely awesome.

Yes, it took a while, but not sure the vaccines would have been delivered any earlier anyway?

Would be nice if we could donate more, outside of the COVAX program, directly to Thailand, given the long history of coopration.

Coin flip on Thailand's COVAX decision. May be too early to evlauate?

Additionally,

Mr Tanee said the US has provided assistance to Thailand worth US$30 million (about 900 million baht) since the onset of the pandemic last year.

The US has donated protective and treatment equipment worth $17.5 million.

Also, the US has given $13 million worth of aid to Thailand through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which has worked closely with the Public Health Ministry.

Quite a few other initiatives have been implemented as well.

I think it's best to give them to COVAX and let them handle the distribution and logistics.  They're setup for this.  IMHO!!

I doubt any of these will go to Thailand anyway.  There are certainly more than 92 other countries with lower income per capita than Thailand.

That's good news.  Pfizer has ramped up production (as have some others) to impressive numbers.  Let;s hope the supply chain for everything from raw materials to vials and syringes keeps pace.

500 million is chump change considering global population, but it's a start.

These doses are not in stock.  Pfizer will have to manufacture them and then deliver them.  Doubt anything will happen until 2022.

They're ramping up production big time.  But who knows, the demand is huge and many countries are desperately trying to buy these jabs.  Like Thailand! LOL

Pfizer are getting up to about 3 billion doses per year.  Perhaps 4 billion next year.
