Over 2,650 kilograms of drugs to be burned in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Over 2,659 kilograms of narcotics from 1,166 cases, with a value of 5.97 billion baht (149.250 million US dollars) will be burned on June 25 at the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate in Thailand's central province of Ayutthaya.

Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said that the mass burning, which was organized by the Ministry of Public Health to mark the International Anti-narcotics Day on June 26, would represent the 31st such exercise in Thailand, the Thai News Agencyreported on Tuesday.

The vast proportion of the narcotics to be burned will be methamphetamines, while other drugs in the haul include 378 kilograms of heroin, 82 kilograms of opium, and smaller quantitiesof codeine, ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis.

Other organizations to take part in the event will include the Royal Thai Police, the Royal Thai Army and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board.

Last year, Thailand burned drug hauls on three separate occasions.

However, the burnings remain the tip of the iceberg in terms ofthe total quantities of drugs seized, and around 22.2 tonnes of drugs remain in the hands of the government waiting to be destroyed, the report said.

I may be overly cynical but I often wonder if real narcotics are burned at these "ceremonies".

Given that most of these substances are ingested by their users by heating or burning them, surely if someone sets fire to several thousand kilos of assorted drugs in the open air, the whole neighbourhood would be affected?

22.2 tons of drugs waiting to be destroyed? Why don't they burn it all at once?

When the govt. fianally gets around to destroying it, will the total drop to 11 tons due to pilfering by corrupt officials?

I don't pretend to know all the answers, but we need to find a solution to the drug problem worldwide.

I think the first step would be for parents to better educate their children on the adverse effects illicit drugs have on them and society.

2.5 tons of drugs up in smoke in Thailand; government driver arrested for trafficking

AYUTTHAYA: Thailand burned about 2.5 tons of drugs worth about 6 billion baht (US$150 million) Friday in part of its tough anti-narcotics crusade, a day after a government driver was arrested for trafficking.

The drugs torched included more than 23 million tablets of methamphetamines weighing 2.07 tons (2.28 US tons), said Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan, who presided over the incineration ceremony.

Also destroyed were 378.3 kilograms (835 pounds) of heroin and 83 kilograms (183 pounds) opium. Thai authorities seized the drugs during the past four months, Sudarat said. The Thai government regularly burns narcotics after the courts rule on the evidence.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's war on drugs suffered an embarrassment late Thursday, after police arrested Somchai Japai _ a driver with the Government House _ on charges of drug trafficking.

The prime minister's secretary general, Yongyuth Thiyapairat, told reporters he asked police to investigate Somchai after receiving a letter complaining that some government employees were selling narcotics.

The Thai government launched a massive crackdown on drugs last year that killed about 2,300 people in related violence. It also arrested thousands of suspects.

The administration claimed most of the victims were traffickers killed in gang wars. But human rights groups accused police of carrying out extrajudicial killings.

Despite the bloody clamp down, drugs remain a problem in Thailand and narcotics agencies have resumed operations recently.
