Suicide a major concern with 800 lives lost in Cambodia each year

Featured Replies

Suicide is a major concern in Cambodia, even though the World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that it ranks seventh among Asean nations by actual numbers with 800 deaths recorded in 2019.

According to the WHO’s report “Suicide worldwide in 2019” released last week, there were a total of 800 Cambodian people (234 women and 566 men) who committed suicide while only 12 people in Brunei, 390 in Laos and 650 in Singapore. This number is lower than Myanmar with 1,565 people, Malaysia with 1,823, the Philippines with 2,325, Thailand with 6,147, Indonesia with 6,544, and Vietnam with 7,249, it added.

Royal Academy of Cambodia researcher Pang Ratana told Khmer Times that based on his observation, most of the victims who committed suicide were suffering from depression, a broken-heart, economic factors, work pressure or a family crisis. “From what I have observed and working with youth, the number of suicides in Cambodia seems to be rising since 2011 and most of the victims were between 18 and 30-years-old,” he said.
