Phuket's governor was guest of honour yesterday at Phuket International Airport where a trial run was conducted for the arrival of foreign tourists next week.

 

The much heralded Phuket Sandbox - upon which the reopening of Thailand rests - takes place on Thursday July 1st.

 

Narong Winsew inspected the walk from the plane, screening and temperature checks, those all important vaccine document checks, the waiting for the transport to hotels. 

 

Everyone would be making sure that two vaccine doses had been jabbed into the arms of visitors already.

 

If not - and these would probably be local tourists - they would face an instant test before being chaperoned to their hotel for 24 hour quarantine. They would be personally informed by the health authorities of the results.

Narong told Daily News that everything would be ready by the end of the month. 

 

A "Big Cleaning" day will be held on Friday (tomorrow) to make sure that the island was sanitized. 

 

Earlier reports suggested that five direct flights will be landing on Thursday from abroad. 

 

Phuket is pulling out all the stops for the Sandbox. It will be followed by the reopening of three islands in Surat Thani mid-July and if all goes to plan other provinces later in the year including Chiang Mai, Krabi, Chonburi (Pattaya) and Bangkok.

Result is obvious:

Very few tourists will come, no more domestic tourists...

They can put the sand in the box and close it definitely!

I stake my job on this being a success said the senior most official in the province.

Guess the 'everything is ready" checklist is;

 

1)  Extra guards in arrivals to control dirty foreigners - check

2) Increasing covid cases within local community not publicised - check

3) Increasing covid deaths denied - check

4) Containment areas disguised as hotel rooms - check

5) Illegal drugs distributed to dealers - check

6) RTP extortion protocols emphasised - Check

7) Army snipers in position to deter escapees - check

???? Mobile disinfectant patrols to hose streets behind foreigners - Check

as opposed to reading it in the tealeaves of their next morning brew ..

The most senior official in the province more likely would be saying "I stake my deputies job on this being a success" !

Anyone want to guess ( I was gonna say bet, but that's illegal ) when the first tourist gets re-infected ?

Ive got a relative in a tidy size travel agents in London and she confirmed nobody is booking anything other than a week on the Norfolk Broads

The wonderful Phuket Sandwich will be unfortunately received in a lukewarm state.  Hope it's not completely spoiled, but then when your planning a scheme and it's never fully cooked or ifinished until the day it's first served what do you exoect...

sounds like a good idea  -  sailing alone with a beer in hand, unmolested by jetski morons, and ale to stop at pubs - very relaxing.  I might give it a try ...

State approved hotels where possibly 30% of staff haven't even had a jab yet...

But how do those Norfolk Broads compare with the Issan broads?

Could start with rehearsals for how to get out of the UK first what visa for expired long stay that can be converted etc I still have no bloody clue for example ????

Well he has got three to choose from so one less isn't going to make a lot of difference.

Can someone here tell this bunch to better stick their energy into buying vaccines for Thais?
