Cambodia Vulture Working Group (CVWG) yesterday released census results conducted nationwide showing 121 vultures were recorded on June 20 at four vulture “canteens”. Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra told Khmer Times yesterday that 121 vultures were recorded according to CVWG’s report on the Cambodian Vulture Census.

The Cambodian Vulture Census is conducted five times a year on March 10, June 10, June 20, September 20 and December 20 at Stung Treng province’s Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary, Preah Vihear province’s Chheb Wildlife Sanctuary, Kratie province’s Sambo Wildlife Sanctuary and Mondulkiri province’s Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary.

This is an increase compared to the June 10, 2021 census, when 82 birds were recorded, including 13 red-headed vultures, 42 white-rumped vultures and 27 slender-billed vultures. “I would like to thank all the ministries, institutions and partner organisations that participated in the 2021 Cambodia Vulture Census as it is important to know the true number of vultures  and the evolving situation around the number of vultures in Cambodia,” said Pheaktra.
