Speedo1968
I have used this downloader for many years. Recently it started to download videos from Youtube in 2 parts, the first part fairly quickly the second part very slow and often hals for some time at 10%. Can someone please explain why this is ? I use ClipGrab as an alternative.

I use a different downloader based on youtube_dl and have similar problems occasionally. It looks like my internet provider 3BB detects/throttles? When using a Singapore VPN I get a more steady download. Not lightning fast (~100 Mbit/s) but good enough. Orignally with 3BB IP I had between 300 to 500 Mbit/s. Two parts as such is not new. All highres youtube videos consist of separate video and audio streams. Audio tiny compared to video. Downloaders will download them one after the other and combine them to one container. Youtube of course would like to make the downloads impossible. They managed to have youtube_dl taken off for a while but back up now. Cat and mouse race. gamb00ler
Perhaps more cumbersome than special purpose downloaders, but VLC can download as well as play, at least on my Mac. I think it has the same functionality in Windoze.

Yes it can. I use to play short videos without being bothered by youtube adds. The downloader that I use on Windows is: "Win X Youtube Downloader". Works for 4k: (507 MB for 3:15 min ) And again: slow with 3BB address. Switch VPN to Singapore and much better. Throttling by 3BB is my guess. clokwise
Just use jdownloader. It's free open-source and has been around for a very long time (over a decade?) with a huge user base. It's also still updated nearly every day. It not only downloads YouTube, but literally everything else. It's extremely configurable and powerful. phetphet
Have you tried unplugging your router for a couple of minutes? Sometimes seems to cure problems.
fdsa
Ihe internet provider throttles the download speed after some time. I just restart youtube-dl when I notice that speed drop and it becomes fast again.

Youtube seems to be using other tricks too. I mainly download UK tv series for watching in the evening, find Dailymotion very useful.

I have uninstalled my original version of 4K ( with updates ) and reinstalled so will see how it goes,
cormanr7
You might try the (free) extreme download manager 2020 (XDM 2020), it is very fast for youtube videos and also quite effective as a general video manager. Apparently quite a few people use XDM as an alternative to the (paid) IDM.
tgw
I use Win X as well. It's the one that works best for me at the moment. The slightly convoluted way of downloading using VLC is a robust fallback method.

Daffy D
A very few files on YouTube have copywrite protection and will not download. You can watch them but not possible to save. If a certain file does not download just try a different source.
