cobyco
Hi Is there any government institute that can guide me regarding avocado growing? Thanks
KannikaP
I read somewhere that growing Avocados is very unfriendly to the environment. Better find a 'happier' crop to grow. LOL
sucit
Are you in the north? I don’t think they can be grown anywhere else.

Come on, tell the whole story, don't discourage responsible growers who may love their guacamole. The issue with avocado growing and negative environmental impacts is rooted in commercial demand, deforestation and pesticide use, without responible regenerative farming practices. This is not about avocadoes being environmentally unfriendly, it is about human need/greed, irresponsible land use and management practices, which could be said about much of the livestock and commercial agriculture in the world. Avocados are grown throughout Thailand, not just in the north. Its just a little tricky to get the growing conditions and management right, because there are environmental factors, pests and diseases that can wipe out a tree or an orchard without mercy if you don't know what you are doing. bbko
This thread has rekindled my interest in growing an avocado tree here in my East Pattaya home, as I always regretted not planting one many years ago when I first moved here. So earlier this week I bought a Hass avocado sapling off of Lazada for 189 b + 64 in shipping. My gardening skills have greatly improved over the years and hopefully they'll disprove the "can only grow them up north" saying. https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i2097892122-s6996450068.html?urlFlag=true&mp=1&spm=spm%3Da2o4m.order_details.item_title.1

MambaJamba
Best guide to grow avocado here is try yourself and see. I recently planted 7 grafted trees of different varieties and several from seeds. I like seedlings more, they look better and grow more beautiful. Most grafted trees are curvy and ugly.

They sell now 1 avocado per 1 aud, 1 kilos would be around 5 AUD or 115 baht/ per kilos. The problem is production cost is very expensive in Australia. After they collect avocados they put them in factory where they sanitize them, recheck and do many other useless manipulations. If they just bring hem directly from farm to supermarket without packaging , they would have profit. Anyway here in Thailand avocados sold at 80-90 baht per kilos, which is very good price and avocados growers do many times more money than rice farmers. So it's only environmentally unfriendly to grow them if it creates a shortage of water for other purposes or a lot of energy is used to get water to the trees.
