There are no longer any wild tigers in Cambodia due to indiscriminate hunting, loss of habitat and the use of snares, according to the Environment Ministry yesterday on World Tiger Day. Ministry of Environment spokeman Neth Pheatra told Khmer Times that the last footage of a single tiger was recorded in 2007 by WWF-Cambodia and is now declared functionally extinct.

According experts, there are no longer any wild tigers present in Cambodia since 2016. The government agreed to make the wild tiger present in Cambodia again by cooperating with stakeholder organisations. “Therefore, this a really necessary thing that we are working on with stakeholder organisations to create prey which is the wild tiger’s food and other operations to make sure we can prepare a safe habitat for wild tigers,” said Pheaktra.

“However, it will take long to bring back wild tigers as the team needs to check the safe habitat clearly and we need more time but cannot tell exactly how much time,” he said. In addition, the ministry will try harder to protect and conserve endangered species that are currently present in Cambodia to make sure they are protected and will not be extinct.
