Ict Shuts Down Hi-thaksin.org, 16 Other Websites

research done by a professor at Chula shows that in Oct 06 2,xxx sites were blocked.

by march 2007, the number of block sites has risen to 22,xxx sites

interestingly Minister Peerapat who very nicely talked about the need for govt and media to work together, simply left the meeting after he had delivered his 'nice' speech, not even staying another 5 minutes to listen to what the media had to say. some good collaboration that will be :o

anyhow....not sure if this WILL materialise, but someone from some internet media group who are in negotiation with govt said that the agreement is that the ICT will now only block sites with pornography, while for political sites (who usually get shut down for reasons of national security), the ICT will have to file a report to the police, who will then investigate, BEFORE the site can be shut down. they said this law is being worked on and hope to complete by June......

ofcourse for now while its all words, the ICT can continue to do whatever :D

ok, other the aforementioned youtube and proxy server sites (which are banned by thaivisa), can someone provide specific websites that are blocked?

:o

The reason I ask is that over the past 3 months, any number of threads have been started here saying this site and that site have been blocked... yet when I try them out, they invariably load up without any difficulty.

Thanks for the lengthy list... but it seems I have no difficulty accessing 18 of the 20 I've tried so far...ranging over a variety of topics and issues. The other 2 were news articles that were no longer carried by the news organization on their current list due to their age, but are available from the archives for a fee.

The majority of the sites clearly seem to be non-Thaksin related which is not what I was specifically looking for given the thread topic, but nevertheless it seems most are open anyway so it seems to reinforce my doubts about these "thousands and thousands of websites that are blocked" statements.

I will keep going through the list, however, and thank you again for sending it.

Now that's interesting, since the list I sent you is barred [e.g BBC news items] from my connexion in Bangkok.

Specific examples :-

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5367936.stm

theage.com.au/news/business/thai-riches-hinged-on-wise-kings-prodigal-son/2006/06/27/1151

but one prominent ones shut down included Midnight University (site by academics against the coup)....its now back online though

the other one is the Panthip Rajdamneon (political discussion) chatroom. ....they (ICT) didnt quite 'shut it down' ...but the Minister HIMSELF called the owner of Panthip.com telling the guy theres a problem with his site...so the guy said...well seeing that you are calling yourself...I better shut it down.

nice pressure without having to do the actual shutting down huh :o

Phew... ok, finally finished with the list provided.

63 total sites on the list (some were duplicated so second one removed)

Of the 63 total sites, was to able to access directly without difficulty 31 of them. There were an additional 29 sites that were accessed to the main website, but the individual extension did not exist (many were from free websites and once they exceeded the bandwidth provided for free and evidently not paid for, they were cancelled). If a website doesn't exist, I don't consider it blocked, which is reasonable I feel. Others in the category had various tags from the web host such as "contents deleted by uploader" or were news articles moved by the news organizations into archives which were available only upon paid subscription service.

btw, The Age link above is in that category. The first BBC link I can access without any difficulty.

There were 3 websites of the 63 that timed out. I did not receive the "green screen" on ANY of the 63 websites, including the ones that timed out. By "sneezing", I ultimately accessed all three. 1 site was a site that contained off-color jokes (ala youtube), 1 site was porno (rather disgusting, even by my standards, "grandma porn") :D :D and 1 site was political in nature.

So as it turns out...... one site out of sixty-three supposedly blocked websites was really worthy of being considered "blocked."

Thank you for the list as it DID confirm that my suspicions that reports of "Thousands Blocked" are very dubious... at least from where I sit.

Not wanting to give it away just in case the "Blockers" are watching...

I'll encrypt it by only saying that there are 3 T's in its name. :D

Well you are a lucky one then. This does show that in your case you appear to have access to pages that others {not just I} do not. This does highlight a point I have made consistently that the fragmented nature of the URL banning leads to just such a situation. It also makes the point that just because you can access it does not mean that a real ICT block is not in place for others.

The list I sent you was a quick lift from a version which is available on the net. In fact you have a copy now, since you accessed all the URL's. The list contains over 10,000 sites which are classified as forbidden. I didn't scan the links for content so sorry if you were offended.

PS as I said both links go green on True for me still.

No worries about being offended... I'm an ex-sailor, but IMHO, if they want to ban a site showing 18 year olds *hopefully they're at least 18* getting it on with obese 80 year old women... I got no real heartburn with that. Now if they started banning sites with Methinee... well then, that's a different ballgame.

If the list provided is from a list of 10,000 supposedly banned websites... then the list needs some serious editing work as many of the sites listed were duplicated or insignificant variations of the same website, eg. www.abcd.com and abcd.com don't really qualify as 2 "blocks". The other thing it needs is updating as many sites supposedly "blocked" simply don't exist anywhere in cyber-dom. The other outdated portion is the news articles... if they are old enough to be moved into archive sections of these news organizations, they've yellowed with age a bit... but still, in the end, they aren't truly "blocked," they're just not free as they require a paid subscription.

By the by anyone here willing to quickly check the two urls above. Be interested in a wider feedback.

PS John, you were able to access the sites focused on the south in the list sent you, such as puloinfo.net?

The South-related websites were accessible as long as they were still current. Quite a few of those websites, in particular, had expired as they had exceeded their bandwidth that was offered for free by the providing website.

Again, the web provider's site was freely accessible, but an explanation window popped up from them explaining the situation for that particular website that was no longer available. If they have allowed their website to go down for non-payment, I don't consider that as a "blocked" website.

One must also note that there's the cat and mouse game of moving from, often as noted, free server to free server, ahead of the catcher.

As I noted there's a link in the list i sent to SJ to the alleged mcit list, though the version is dated around March. I think. The ministry itself has refused requests to issue any data, it used to.

Ultimately given the fragmentation of the system here there will be holes.

However, it would be unwise in the extreme to believe that widespread censorship of the net is not in place here. It is, and has appeared to be come more pervasive recently.

As there's nothing special about my connection, I can only presume that anyone with the same ISP would have similar results to mine, which is to say it's really minimal and particularly it is not really more pervasive recently, at least in my experience. As is true of many things in Thailand...

your mileage may vary.

I would say that I easily received far more "Cybercop" blocks a year ago under the Thaksin Regime (now that those words are acceptable to use).

Reach both without problems. (Second links article is pulled due to age, but url works and normal 'article is old and removed'-page comes up.)
