A Cambodian-American deportee, who was convicted of causing the death of an elderly Swiss man in Phnom Penh in 2020, has appealed against his sentence. Sek Thuch, a 41-year-old gym instructor residing in Phnom Penh, was arrested on April 29, 2020, after he attacked Markus Zahner – a 69-year-old Swiss man – causing the victim to fall and lose consciousness.

Mr Zahner died five days later from serious injuries sustained in the attack. Sek Thuch was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on September 25, 2020 for intentional aggravated violence resulting in the death of a victim under Article 224 of the Penal Code of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay 80 million riels ($ 200,000)in compensation to the victims family. During the trial, Sek Thuch admitted his guilt, but said he had no intention of attacking the victim.
