What Is "chanan"?

Featured Replies

I need help with the following translation from a thai conversation to english pls...

proc chanan mai tong taam

proc=because

mai tong=no need

taam=do

what does "chanan" mean?

i'd be really grateful for any help

thanks!

"Pro chanan" means therefore. "Chanan" alone can be used as well. Pro Chanan= Chanan =Dangnan (another Thai word that you can use) = "therefore"

Pro chanan mai tong tham = therefore you don't have to ask.

Oh sorry I misread "taam" (do) as "tham"(ask). Yeah the whole phrase means "therfore you don't have to do it."

what does "chann" mean?

Chanan = because (of) /so /hence

proc chanan mai tong taam

= So (hence) You need not to do

thank you very much for the quick responses...really appreciate it :o

My teacher at AUA taught us that 'phro chanan' meant 'so' or 'therefore' but I've also discovered that the word 'mi chanan' means otherwise.

So does the word 'chanan' have a specific meaning and can it be used alone?

Are there any other words or expressions that use the word 'chanan'?

Just curious...

MCL

'chanan' ฉะนั้น is an abbreviation of 'chen nan' เช่นนั้น where 'nan' นั้น is the definite article (similar to 'that') and 'chen' เช่น is a word that can have many meanings, but in this case could be translated as 'like'. 'phraw!' เพราะ by itself means 'because'

So we have 'phraw! chen nan" เพราะ เช่น นั้น which can then be roughly rendered (just for ease of comprehension) as 'because like that' - i.e. 'hence', 'therefore' or 'that's why...'

And 'mi' มิ in 'mi chanan' มิฉะนั้น is a short, formal form of the negation mai ไม่; thereby we get ไม่ เช่น นั้น 'not like that'- i.e. 'otherwise'

HTH :o
