ASEAN NOW Content Team
The Health Ministry confirmed that there was no data leak in the PeduliLindungi (to care and protect) application and advised the public to continue using the COVID-19 contact tracking app. According to Siti Nadia Tarmizi, the ministry's spokesman for COVID-19 immunisation, there is a lot of unconfirmed information or hoaxes in the community about a number of distinct cases that aren't tied to one another, but are related to the applications. First, she verified that there is no indication of data leak in the applications as of yet, referring to President Joko Widodo's leaked vaccination certificate. She indicated that certain parties have the President's citizenship identification number (NIK) and vaccination date, which they can use to obtain the President's vaccination certificate. “So, this is a data leak, not an abuse of personal identity to access the information of unrelated parties,” she clarified. Tarmizi then urged the people to continue using the PeduliLindungi apps, citing the law's protection of all Indonesian citizen personal data. She went on to say that the apps had undergone a rigorous IT security audit by the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN). According to the Jakarta Police investigation, a suspected administration worker at a ward office abused his authority to access PCare, allowing him to manufacture vaccination certificates and connect them to the apps without going through required procedures and without the requirement to get vaccinated. She stressed that the issue was a misuse of authority rather than a data breach.
