snoop1130
The House of Representatives, today (Thursday), passed the long-awaited four draft bills against torture and enforced disappearance by state officials, in its first reading with 368 votes for, one vote against and one abstention. The four draft bills were separately proposed by the cabinet, by Palang Pracharat MP for Bangkok Sira Jenjaka, by former party-list MP Wan Muhamad Noor Matha of the Prachachart party and by Democrat party-list MP Suthas Ngernmuen. The government-initiated draft will be the main legislation to be scrutinised by a 25-member House scrutiny committee appointed today by the House. Among the members are human rights advocate Somchai Homlaor, nominated by the Democrat party, former national human rights commissioner Angkhana Nilapaichit, nominated by the Seri Ruam Thai party, and anti-government activist Sombat Boonngarmanong and former Pheu Thai MP Dr. Tosaporn Serirak, nominated by Pheu Thai party. Popular Post 4MyEgo
One would think that any country would require such bills, but then again, Thailand is unique, plastic bags over ones head recently come to mind.

khunjeff
Oh, so these bills are against torture and enforced disappearance - I had naturally assumed the opposite...
Grusa
So, as a State employee, if I torture and murder someone, I get 25 years and or a ½m fine. As private citizen, 500bt and a Wai.

Bluespunk
“The torture and enforced disappearance bills were given fast-track treatment by the House after public outrage over the release, on social media, of a video clip showing a group of policemen in Nakhon Sawan province using plastic bags to cover the head of a drug suspect during the course of their investigation.” Ah so it’s a PR stunt, a bit like the good taxi driver stories that used to appear after a negative incident. 15 hours ago, snoop1130 said: The government-initiated draft will be the main legislation to be scrutinised by a 25-member House scrutiny committee appointed today by the House Nudge nudge, wink wink-as you were boys.

ALLSEEINGEYE
Now the next problem is just enforcement. Pretty hard to enforce a law that is usually broken by the enforcers.
Dont confuse me
Does this mean the end of photo shoots with petrified Burmese murder suspects admitting their guilt? If I were one of the unfortunate people who had a confession kicked out of me then I'd attempt to turn this into a bandwagon for all to jump on. Artisi
Amazing for a country who likes to think they are part of the modern world, now passing laws that should have been in place 50 or more years ago, but then I guess the wheels turn slowly for the plebs

Just going through a rhetorical motion by a corrupted body.
