According to data from the National Golf Foundation, "only 26 percent of all golfers shoot below 90 consistently on regulation 18-hole courses; 45 percent of all golfers average more than 100 strokes per round.”

On a par-70 course, you can break 90 simply by playing bogey golf. Focus instead on continuously giving yourself chances to make bogey.

If you want to break 90, you need to eliminate blow out holes (doubles or worse). If you find yourself in the trees, just get the ball out to a place you can play the next shot easily. Try get on the green and make a putt or 2 putt for a bogey or maximum double bogey.

Being able to break 90 means that you're better than most golfers.

It'll take two to five years of golfing and frequent practice before you reach this point.

However, it's certainly easier as well as less time consuming than trying to break 80 or break 70.

So where do you feature then?
