Police in the Samrong Thap jurisdiction of Surin in Thailand's north east served an arrest warrant on Phon Thamthong, 45, after he set fire to his own house and fled to sleep with relatives at the weekend.

The house was completely destroyed. His mother, Nee, 74, a deaf woman managed to escape with a teen grandson.

But despite the help of neighbors the house was razed to the ground.

The local phoo yai ban called Amphan said that Yai Nee has five children and there had been an argument with one son late at night over money to buy alcohol, reported Daily News.

He said that the son was drunk.

The old lady's 5,000 baht she had with her had gone up in flames along with all the grandson's M3 schoolbooks.

Locals were helping though some organisations were due to visit to help her plight later.

His actions are not to be tolerated and can only be described as despicable. However, if he happens to be the youngest child, it would be part of the culture for him to live at the family home with his parents.

A new moron is born every day. This time it was a 45 year old baby.

Diaper Tiiime! If you play with fire, you will wet your bed. Ops! forgot. He burned that one, right?

To take care of the parents, not stay home get pi##ed and burn the house down, that's got nothing to do with culture.

Like I said, his actions were despicable. I was just pointing out that the idea of a 45 year old man living at home with Mum is not unusual in Thai culture.

As with most news reports, the reasons for the actions are not clear. I am in no way condoning the actions but there could well have been major issues. The Covid pandemic has left many Thais destitute, penniless and mentally broken.

Let's hope this man can turn his life around.

One of the huge issues here is the princely treatment given to boys. They are nothing special. On any level. Yet, the parents let them get away with nearly anything, and spoil them rotten. What Thai parents need to start saying to their sons is this:

You are nothing special.

Your sister is as good as you, or better.

She works harder, she is more ambitious and she does not take everything, and everyone for granted.

So, until you prove to us, to the family, and to the community that you are special, by your deeds, actions, and hard work, you are not anything but a normal kid. Nothing more.

My guess is there are alot of Thai parents who wonder later, where did I go wrong with my son, and why did he turn out to be so self entitled, so spoiled, so unwilling to put in a hard days work, and how did he become so rotten, and so undeserving of our care and protection?

Also, it is my observation that alot of parents seem to have lost the art of parenting. The child sort of becomes the boss. This is epidemic in Thai households with the sons, who are treated as if they are very special, when they are just ordinary boys, who have proven nothing to the world yet, as to their worthiness for adulation. As a result, children today are less self-reliant. Many preteen children don’t yet know how to be alone at bedtime and they haven’t been forced to learn. Parents band-aid the issue by allowing co-sleeping.

Elder abuse is not restricted to Thailand...

Has anyone posted that it is? This is a forum about what happens in Thailand.

Likely true. But, there do seem to be a disproportionately high number of ungrateful sons, lacking perspective, wisdom, ambition and loyalty.

but there do seem to be several stories here like this recently of drunken sons abusing their mothers.....

Obviously you aren't living in this part of Thailand, where an alarming large proportion of males are totally useless. Hence the equally large proportion of "Mia Farangs".

And sadly, some of these "Mia Farangs" are lacking morals just as their male counterpart, hence the annoying prevalence of "Thai geeks".

In Issan one can observe some of the best, as well as the worst of Humanity.

Lets hope his mother can too, following this despicable action.

I do hope that he is not the only child that this woman has had, and that one of her other

children will be able to give her a place to live.

This 45 year old child. should spend time in jail for sure.

Geezer

Although it does appear to be becoming part of Thai culture init.

45 year old, or 6 year old...?

If I can't have it, no one can... Type of attitude.

Make him sleep in the streets as he made himself and his family homeless deliberately. Look after the family, though. Just hope he never finds out where they are.  But I know that's just wishful thinking.
