BANGKOK, Nov 5 (TNA) – The cabinet approved a 3.6-billion-baht budget for the local development of ChulaCov19 and Baiya vaccines to cope with COVID-19.

 

Deputy government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said that of the budget, 2.32 billion baht would be spent on the production of the “ChulaCov19 mRNA” vaccine for its third-stage human trial required for its registration with the Food and Drug Administration and on preparation for its production for general administration in the future.

 

The project will support the development of complete infrastructures needed for the production of mRNA vaccines and will enable Thailand to produce COVID-19 vaccines for its own use.

Why?  is it in the hopes they will be able to recoup the investment by selling it onward?  This country has not created any types of medications that have not been acquired by way of actual clinical or research work done without an outside company or university research center.  Thailand has taken license to assume the proprietary work of others.  Lets look at a few of them:

 

They rejected Japans patent for Favipiravir, and took liberty to then create their own version, in essence stealing the formula, and not even making it as a Generic.

 

Then way back in 2007 they decided to Take an AIDS medication and make it themselves causing Abbot to:

Abbott, the manufacturer of Kaletra, has confirmed that it will not seek licenses for seven new products in Thailand, in retaliation for the Thai government’s decision to issue a compulsory license for the HIV protease inhibitor Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir). The products will include a new heat-stable version of Kaletra, called Aluvia, which would be highly desirable in the Thai climate. The compulsory license will allow the Thai government to import generic versions of Kaletra from India in order to save money. Thailand provides antiretroviral medicines for a nominal fee to all HIV-positive citizens who can’t afford to buy the drugs. Abbott offered a price cut for Kaletra in Thailand in mid-February.

 

I am not aware of any home grown medications except Kratom, and now Marijuana.  They have of course the generics that the GPO makes, and of course all of the unproven collagen etc...drink mixes.

Methinks the 3.6bn is actually just a syphon fund as they are far too late to develop anything to sell. You gotta admire their ability to make public funds accessible whom have lifestyles to maintain ????
