The Cabinet approved 2.316 billion baht for the ChulaCov19 project, which seeks to yield an mRNA vaccine for use against COVID-19. The budget will go toward testing the vaccine in volunteers, under phase 3 clinical trials, and preparing for the production of doses.

 

Registration of the vaccine for emergency use will follow, in accordance with the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration. Chulalongkorn University has been asked to produce a mechanism for follow-up and evaluation of the vaccine project, to ensure transparency and traceability.

 

On the same day, the Cabinet endorsed 1.309 billion baht to fund the Baiya vaccine project, which is a collaboration between Chulalongkorn University and Baiya Phytopharm Co., Ltd on the development of a COVID-19 vaccine derived from the tobacco plant.

 

Phase 3 clinical trials for this vaccine will involve at least 10,000 volunteers, as required by the Food and Drug Administration. When successful, the project will enable Thailand to produce its own Covid vaccine from the upstream level.

 

Chulalongkorn University has been asked to quickly report findings from phase 2 human trials to be used as information for the consideration of budget approval.

My guess would be that they want to be seen on the international scene of vaccine production as an equal.  Other than that 3.6 billion baht is a lot of money that could be spent getting this country back on its feet.  Sure if it works it will be helpfull for future development of vaccines, but why after all of these years of "Borrowing" other formularies that the GPO then makes and uses here in the country to produce a Generic or in the case of Favipiravir would they?  Maybe in the long run they see it as a way of saving from having to purchase these types of vaccines from outside of the country and relying on others, but in the meantime their own new homegrown lab to produce a vaccine has had a very poor and slow start.........of course this is my view.

Why does the word "miss-appropriation" keep popping up in my mind?

Home-grown vaccines are interesting.

 

But will they ever be approved (WHO, individual countries, airlines) for those who wish to travel outside of Thailand?
