Sri Lanka to buy vaccines and drugs from Thailand

Sri Lanka requests to buy vaccines for the Japanese encephalitis and other medicines from Thailand’s Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO).

Minister of Public Health Md.Mongkol Na Songkhla reveals that his Sri Lankan counterpart made the request during their meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. The purchase of the drugs and vaccines is expected to be a government-to-government deal which involves no broker and reduces the costs of the products. Both countries have already discussed the purchase in detail and the Sri Lankan public health minister will travel to Thailand to officially sign the purchase contract.

Sri Lanka has a plan to buy the vaccines for the Japanese encephalitis 500,000 doses a year for four years. The price of the vaccine is two U.S. dollars a dose. It is now studying the list of medicines produced by GPO in order to buy more drugs from Thailand in the future.

The Thai public health minister affirms that the sale of the vaccines to Sri Lanka will not affect medical services in Thailand as GPO produces the vaccines as many as four million doses a year while the country need only one million doses a year.
