British luxury department store chain Selfridges is being sold to a Thai retailer and an Austrian property firm.

 

The deal for the majority of Selfridges Group is worth around £4bn ($5.4bn), the BBC understands.

 

Founded in 1908 by US retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, the company is best known for its flagship department store on London's Oxford Street.

Selfridges being sold to Thai Central Group and Austrian Signa

Luxury British store chain Selfridges is being sold to Thailand’s Central Group and Austrian property company Signa Holding for an estimated 180 billion baht (USD 5.37 billion).

 

Central and Signa, which already jointly run major department stores across Europe, said that they reached an agreement to acquire the brand best known for its Oxford Street store in London.

 

There are 25 department stores worldwide under Selfridges operation. The deal will take over 18 of those, while seven stores in Canada will be excluded, according to Reuters.

Well, after the Italian "La Rinascente" and Swiss "Globus" for billions of EUR, nothing comes as a surprise. It ensures though, that the Chirativat family will not be on top of the "List of famine" anytime soon. Where does the money come from - me wonders ...........
