Thailand’s first self-styled ‘virtual’ monk, Phra Maha AI, aspires to propagate the Lord Buddha’s teachings using easily understandable language and good natured preaching, which is easily accessible to the new-generation of Thais.

 

In his first ever interview with Thai media, Phra Maha AI told Thai PBS that he got the inspiration from a virtual influencer abroad and then started working with a team of computer programmers to create a 2-D computer generated animated cartoon character.

 

The monk admitted, however, that elderly people may not understand what a ‘virtual’ monk is, but the majority of the young people love it because it is something new.

They are now officially moving away from the clear and independent path. The teachings of Buddha is that all material things are of no value. It started with mobile phones, computers and smoking monks. Now they have created Monk Headroom! All for the money and everlasting greed.

There's an 'opinion' piece on BP's website today: "New narrative needed on getting rich" - says it all!

 

While over the years I've met many devout Thai Muslims, Christians, etc., it's not as easy to find devout Buddhists, as most Thais (nowadays) seem to worship almost exclusively the 'god of money', and also, that's maybe more a traditional worship, all kinds of spirits.

 

Funny thing is, many Thais, at the same time, don't seem to be inclined to work hard towards their 'get rich' goal, but rather trust the lottery, or just sit around, waiting for what, money to rain from the sky?

I understand that younger people need something different than listening to a 60 year old monk go on and on with their chanting that has no interest for younger people.  I'm not sure this is the way, but something has to be done to reach this younger audience.  I'm not saying change the message, I'm saying find a better way to deliver it.  Find a way to join the message with this new modern world.  

Will he be preaching virtual Buddhism?
