The National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department to control number of visiting tourists for fear of harming nature

The National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department (DNP) has set plans to limit the number of tourists at important tourist sites of Thailand as it is afraid that an excessive number of tourists will harm nature and environment.

Director of the National Park Research Division, Songtham Suksawang (ทรงธรรม สุขสว่าง) has presided over the opening ceremony of a workshop on recreation development of the Khao Laem Ya (เขาแหลมหญ้า) National Park in Koh Samet, Rayong Province. Participants of the workshop include officials from the Khao Laem Ya National Park, Muko Surin Marine National Park, Khao Yai National Park, Erawan National Park, and Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

Mr Songtham reveals that officials of the five national parks will survey and collect samples of natural resources of important tourist sites across the country and conduct environmental assessments of tourism there. He says that after the officials have concluded which tourist sites have been affected by tourism, they will propose the ministry to limit the number of tourists there during festivals and long vacations.

The director says the department has selected Koh Samet to participate in the pilot project surveying damages caused by tourism.

Good luck to those people seriously trying to preserve what remains of Thailand's national park system which are seen for the most part as money making opportunities. All the parks I've been into are deadly quiet places void of birdlife. I've looked into streams and the only animals around seem to be insects.....inedible ones that is. Most parks are infested with weeds.
