Daily News reporters hotfooted it to the north east of Thailand after they heard that a golden eel was attracting lottery attention.

In Elephant City - also known as Surin - they met up with 33 year old restaurant owner Chainam Aramreuang.

He said the eel - 62 cms long with a 4.5 cm head - was caught by an employee and the locals wanted to cut it up and eat it.

But he saved the day for the eel and put it in an aquarium instead. He said it was unusual in that it could be easily handled.

Ever since he saved it from the chopping board he had experienced nothing but luck in terms of money and his work life.

He credited the eel with bringing good fortune - "nam choke" in Thai.

Now his friends and the locals are busily getting in on the act reckoning that #80, the number of the restaurant's address, will come up in the lottery - either that or 801, 81 or 01.

Others have been taking pictures with their mobile phones of the eel's skin to divine the numbers with 25 and 41 detected so far.

We had a golden eel about 5 years ago, and 4 family members all had small wins on the lottery over a period of 5 months, unfortunately yai kept feeding it chunks of meat (against my advice) and the polluted water killed it.
