BANGKOK (NNT) - Authorities said Thailand will remain committed to combating intellectual property (IP) infringement, after the country was excluded from the Notorious Markets List announced recently by the United States.

 

The reports of the Office of the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) "2021 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy" were recently released. The list has identified 42 online 35 physical markets that allegedly engage in or support major trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.

 

Director-general of the Intellectual Property Department Vuttikrai Leewiraphan stated that the U.S has recently announced it will exclude Thailand from its Notorious Markets List both for physical and online markets. This is the first time in four years that the US has not discovered any notorious markets in Thailand, either physical or online, that sell counterfeit and pirated products.

 

The Director-general attributed the accomplishment to authorities working hard to combat counterfeit and pirated goods. He believes the report would boost the country’s reputation, attract investment, and motivate business owners to invest in innovation and technology.

 

Last month, the department inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with online shopping operators to prevent online infringements that might damage economic growth, commerce, and investment while decreasing consumer trust in online trading. The department is also negotiating an MoU with ad agencies to assure that they would not promote providers who exploit pirated movies, music, and drama series via online channels.

they didn't look close enough or maybe they didn't visit the right places... they are everywhere

Try and buy a genuine memory card on Lazada Thailand, all the ones I received are fake, had to buy from farang owned business in Pattaya eventually.

The last time I bought a laptop at Tukom Pattaya, I couldn't find a legitimate license of ANY of the software it came with, and it was LOADED!

Failing to find counterfeit goods in Thailand is right up there with failing to find prostitution or gambling.

Memory cards are not fake they are poor quality. They are sold all over the World at discounted prices. But cheap memory from Amazon, you would realize. No memory card is fake. That are of poor quality. And also Lazada Thailand is not a Thai company. You can buy the same memory card in the USA also.

If the vendor misrepresents either the capacity or speed of a card then it is fake.

Nope. All over USA vendors do that. It is called consumer fraud. That does not mean card is fake. A Card is a card it cannot be fake. There is no fake card.

Quibbling (noun), the action of raising objections about a trivial matter.

 

A "Luis Vuitton" bag or a "Rolex" watch or a "Scandisk" memory card that are cheaply-made knockoffs are indeed fakes - they are fake LV's, fake Rolexes and fake Scandisks.  Although they are bags, watches and cards, they will not last as well or perform as well as the genuine branded items they purport to be, and in some cases the larger and more distinguishable fake items are at risk of being confiscated by customs officials upon return to one's home country.   That's (clearly) what the article is referring to.
