BANGKOK, March 7 (TNA) – The country logged 65 new COVID-19 fatalities which marked the new high of deaths in the latest wave of the disease, according to the Department of Disease Control.

Dr Chakrarat Pittayawonganont, the epidemiology director of the department, said the high deaths resulted from daily new COVID-19 caseloads of over 20,000 from early February and 95% of new fatalities were vulnerable and elderly people, especially bed-ridden people who contracted the disease from carers.

Dr Chakrarat said that only 30% of elderly people were vaccinated against COVID-19 although the government intended to inoculate 70% of them.

Lets keep or open the borders and let all the COVID carriers in, just like it happened  in OCT.  Now you have what you have, record highs, and record  deaths, and all to get in the tourist and make a buck.  So, now that the numbers are highest and deaths are highest,  does the country do what it did before and lock stock and close up?  I mean when the numbers were low and it should've been open it wasn't,  so now that they are higer than ever lets do the reverse  and open more, let it in more and ease the restrictions.   Its not like it will keep getting  worse, oh wait!  It is getting worse.

But such a figure on its own is largely meaningless.  How does this death rate relate to other causes of mortality? (Well down the list one suspects). What is the usual mortality rate for respiratory diseases at this time of year among the elderly? Is there currently a surplus of deaths due to this level of Covid infection? Surely context is everything. Above all, do 65 deaths a day justify throttling the economy?

He said there was.

Until the death and case rate actual declines the answer has to be yes.

The report says that only 30% of the elderly have been vaccinated,, but intended to vaccinated at least 70% ...

So the question is why haven't the Government vaccinated the population,  and what is the total % of vaccinated people in Thailand,   the Government did say they would have over 70% of the population vaccinated by Xmas 2021, somehow I don't think that happened......

Pretty pointless observation.

Say there is a 1% death rate for WITH covid.

If there are more cases, it is obvious the absolute number of deaths will go up.  It is still the same ratio of case/death, so who cares.

" 95% of new fatalities were vulnerable and elderly people, especially bed-ridden people who contracted the disease from carers. "

Is this really new to anyone?

Woah you are sounding a little fascist and totalitarian there buddy boyo.  Maybe a lot of those people decided on their own free will they didn't want the vaccine?  If they end up dying solely due to not receiving injections for covid by choice, they accepted the risk.

The confusion is the result of their imprecision in using terms...

The govt HAS vaccinated more than 70% of the population, if by that they mean having received two shots, which has often been called "fully vaccinated."

But thus far, they've only been able to get about 30% of the population "boosted," meaning a third vaccine shot. And it's that third shot that the science says is necessary to most effectively combat Omicron, because it's a more resistant variant from the earlier ones, and because the effectiveness of the original shots tends to decline over time, particularly in terms of preventing infection. (The far right column below shows the cumulative vax rates for 1, 2, and 3 shots).

Then, if you want to talk about the most vulnerable senior citizen population, those over age 60, right now, almost 80% of them have gotten two shots, but only about 31% have gotten three. And that latter stat leaves a very big vulnerability to Omicron COVID among the older folks living here.
