A Thai driver was left cursing GPS after he drove into a klong on the way back from a house warming party in Korat last night.

Fortunately there were no injuries - Manoon, 39, the driver of the Toyota Vigo and his four companions all managed to swim to safety.

It happened at a U-turn under a bridge at the Lam Boriboon canal in Talad sub-district as Manoon was going home to Kaeng Sanam Nang.

He said it was dark and he was unfamiliar with the road so he put his phone GPS on.

It told him to go straight at the U-turn so that's what he did.

The police and rescue services fished out the pick-up but he'll have to pay for the damage to the front and other repairs as he only had third party insurance and no one else was involved, reported INN

Autonomous driving would be perfect here to send more people into the khlongs.

and of course he drank soda all night

think how many lives will be saved when self driving vehicles become a reality especially in Thailand

Little doubt he was looking at his phone.

I wonder how he would manage driving around in the sticks with no street lights? I guess he could always get headlights retro-fitted.

Seems Russia jamming GPS signal also here lately, not only in Baltic sea. Wonder why, maybe planning for an attack or something.

Idiots of this nature should not be covered by insurance. Our premiums are high as it is.

Could he not see through his heavily tinted windscreen?

- he didn't have full insurance

Often I am in a same position but then with an umbrella,

Have one with me, no rain. No umbrella with me, it's raining cat's and dog's.

There's a lesson in this, but what?

GPS is supposed to be your useful tool , not the other way around.

Agreed.....  There should be a ‘Stupid’ clause in automatic insurance.

IF someone does something outrageously idiotic such as driving into a Khlong why should insurance pay up ????  Insurance is for accidents not utter stupidity.

Well, that's a new one ........ GPS at fault.

In all honesty though it is amazing, how - in my case - Garmin works. Given the mess in routing and one/two-way lane with direction changes during the day .......

Another beauty is trying to find a particular house number. The postmen are special people as nobody else - of any other walk of life - will be able to find a house by its house number.

You're welcome!

I wonder if after he fell in the klong the GPS said "You have arrived"

The cars may have the ability of self driving, but they haven't figured in the state of Thai roads yet.

Love to see how they get on with some of these Sois.

I think that you will find that the "tool" was driving.

It’s no wonder Thai roads are so dangerous with idiots like this behind the wheel.

maybe he thought with his  brain his GPS was for submarine drivers !!!  great bit of thai driving again 10/10

True. Perhaps that's why so many Thais drive and ride without insurance.

Has he had a call from a general offering to buy his engine yet ????

I thought all Thais have no fault insurance.  555

Even the GPS device has clicked on the laughing emoji for this story ????

Thai police quickly located the vehicle using their GPS.

GPS is a fantastically powerful and useful tool, but as with any tool, it's only as effective as the human using it.
