after one years expiry, you have to retest as if it were a first application.

The rules:

After one year redo written/multiple choice test (only).

After three years redo written and driving test.

"couple of years"? I doubt you will get an exception.

To the OP: do you have a valid home country license? What country?

If you got a new passport in the meantime you could try the trick to apply for conversion of your home country license (again).

Not sure whether it will work.

Not seen enough feedback here.

Thanks to everyone, so I see it will not work. Is it possible to get a driver's license on a 30 day stamp? I could use my hotel as residence, for example.

Yes. You can get a 2 year one. But it depends on the province you stay in. The problem can be obtaining the certificate of residence. Not all immigration offices will issue this on a 30 day stamp.

A CoR can also be issued by your embassy. But again the same problem. Will they issue one if you are on visa exempt staying in a hotel? I doubt it.

If you are stuck, talk to an agent.

As suggested do you have your home DL and an IDP you can use them to get abother 2 year Thai DL.

Failing that there are schools to fast track a THai DL.

Mine were (car & motorcycle DL) were expired Aug 2019. Went to Songkhla to renew them. These are what needed in my case:

1. Passport + 4 copies

2. Work permit + 4 copies

3. Confirmation of address from immigration dept (as my work permit doesn't show specific address)

4. As usual doctor's letter certifying you're fit

That's about it. Only get tested for color blindness. Got my new 5 years license.
