BANGKOK (NNT) - A high-ranking official has accepted an invitation to run for prime minister on behalf of the newly formed Sang Anakhot Thai (Building Thailand’s Future) Party.

According to Sang Anakhot Thai Secretary-General Sontirat Sontijirawong, former deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak has been selected as a candidate for the top job after being approached for the position during a meeting.

Sontirat, however, noted that it is still too early to officially announce a candidate for prime minister because the election date has not yet been determined.

Sontirat, a former energy minister for the current government, said the meeting signaled the party’s willingness to fully engage in politics with a series of political activities planned in advance of the election.

According to the party, Uttama Savanayana, the former Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) leader and secretary-general, was also elected party leader.

He recently told a gathering of party members and supporters in Nonthaburi province that the party would invite Somkid to run for prime minister under the banner of the party, whose goal was to alleviate economic hardship.

Uttama went on to say that the party has brought together experts from both the public and private sectors, as well as members of the younger generation, to serve the people’s interests while also strengthening the economy, empowering human resources and promoting constructive politics.

This idiocy of naming the PM by the party with the most seats is just ridiculous.  The PM should be elected in his/her/it's own right like most nations conduct.  The person should have a knowledge of politics, have been in a position as a senator or a MP prior and not be a puppet for the ruling party.

this party was formed by the former PPRP very high ranking members who wanted nominate Prayuth for the PM at the next election.

That's because Prawit took full control of PPRP and will run himself or one of his proteges.

I would not be surprised if this newly formed party is just playing game for the masses.

Their aim might still be Prayuth nomination. And certainly they would be in a coalition government formed by him.

He resigned as Deputy PM in the current regime in July 2020 citing "health issues".

All better now.

This is Thailand... what should be, could be. might be is irrelevant.

We're saved!

I thought Somkid did a decent job when he was in charge of the economy and finances. Seems sane compared to the rest of the political class.

So, now we wait for him to get accused of something.

It's the same in America though we try to hide it better, unlike here where it's in plain view. But sometimes it's truly obvious when a clown ends up in the oval office. ????

same same as the current leader .... birds of the feather flick together

Let me get this straight. This party has anakhot (future) in its name, yet invites one of Thailand's foremost dinosaurs to run for PM? You couldn't make it up.

Same old cycling faces and mindsets.

Keeping it in the club.

Sure....why not.

In all countries with a constitutional monarchy (UK, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Thailand, Japan, etc) the monarch is head of state and a prime minister is either the leader of the party that won the election (the largest party) or is selected by mps and so is usually the head of the largest party in government.  The system in countries with a non-executive president is the same.  The prime minister in Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, India etc are all the leaders fo the largest party.  It is the exception - USA, China, France where people get to vote for someone pre-selected by the leading party or to chose an alternative if an oppositon is allowed.
