How is that possible?  His head anchored to bottom of the lagoon?

Maybe thick silty mud on the bottom, it's bad enough trying to pull your foot out, how would you be able to pull your head out ?

I wonder whether he was wearing boots? Many do when fishing. If he went into the water head first, It's possible to get air trapped in the boots. Any SCUBA diver who's worn a dry suit will know that if you get air into your boots you will end up head down and it's very difficult to right yourself again.
