Sea turtle rescued on Kata Beach in Phuket

Phuket - A sea turtle has been rescued on Kata Beach after being washed ashore yesterday (May 30th).

 

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Phuket Office was notified by a hotel staffer of the distressed sea turtle near Kata Beach in the Mueang Phuket district.

The DMCR arrived at the beach to find an Olive Ridley Turtle. The turtle was 44 centimeters long, 46 centimeters wide and weighed 6.7 kilograms.

After a check-up and a few good meals return it to the ocean.

Not another display for a local aquarium.

Could be...turtles do nest on various beaches around Phuket. However Kata isn't a very good choice as it's a very active recreational area. It may be too small to be breading age and was slightly injured by ghost fishing nets. Interestingly, it's a rare Olive Ridly Turtle...not the Hawksbill commonly seen around Phuket.
