Late PM Samak’s family ordered to pay ฿587m baht compensation to BMA

The Supreme Administrative Court has upheld the ruling of a lower court, ordering the immediate family of the late Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, his widow Khunying Surat and their two daughters, to pay the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) 587 million baht in compensation, plus interest, over a scandalous overpriced fire truck and fire-fighting boat deal with an Austrian company in 2004.

The court reasoned that Samak, then Bangkok governor, did not examine the deal carefully and approved it, and should therefore also be held accountable for the damage caused and pay compensation to the BMA.

The court decided that, as beneficiaries of Samak’s estate, his widow and both daughters, Kanchanakorn Chaiyalap and Kandapa Mungthin, should be have to pay, as ordered by a lower court.

He signed the contract on his last day in office , it was a bad deal,

but good for him I expect, so if the Courts can extract anything from

his family ,who would have benefited , good for the Thai tax payer.

50% rise in the cost of the trucks ? Sheesh, If it had been me I may have increased and skimmed a few %, but 50 ? Caught by greed

The family did a poor job in absconding/concealing their loot in preparation for verdict, saying that, they're wealth enough to pay that fine and still have plenty left over...

Possibly a drop in the ocean from what was "gathered" by him during his term in office and when he was "Financial Advisor" to the CP group.

Still Karma is great although the family having to pay his dues should be a warning to others, past and present, yet screwing them over 14 years after his death seems a bit delayed.

He was well known to be highlt corrupt, always demanding 30% 50% kickbacks etc., and always openly. Quite an unpleasant man.

And if they don't pay up they'll be jailed (joke)

Nasty is a bit of an understatement as he was one of the main instigators to murder the students at Thammasat in 1976. In the end he died quite quickly from liver cancer, in my view he died too quickly and not painfully enough the corrupt, evil bar steward.

"did not examine the deal carefully and approved it, and should therefore also be held accountable".  Do you really expect the wider public to believe that statement?  Pull the other one, it has bells on it!

Samak ....... did not examine the deal carefully ..........

What a joke, he knew perfectly well, how much can be creamed off that particular tart.

Another highlight was his interview during the PM days when he wanted to stamp out a journalist on some questions he would have never had to ask when the same interview would have been done by Thai journalists .......

If this goes through without hinderance (like going bankrupt or transferred assets to third parties) then Thailand started to take the first step of a very very long journey to the 21st century in the right direction ????

Fair comment. The reality is that this was the well know/seen before attitudes and comments to be expected from Samak.

Sorry Khunying? You may have to dip into the petty cash to pay off this minor inconvenience. How much was scammed, just give us the number of zeros, no need for too much detail.

50% mark-up.. nice if you can get away with it... and he did try.

he's dead, one man crusade is his own, wife and kids logically have nothing to do with it, it's a big lost now suck it up
