Kyiv was hit by four Russian missile strikes early on Sunday morning for the first time in three weeks, during which life had been slowly returning to the Ukrainian capital in the relative calm.

Columns of smoke rose over the central Shevchenkivskyi district, home to a cluster of universities, restaurants and art galleries at 6.22am. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said two residential buildings had been hit in what he called an attempt to “intimidate Ukrainians” before a Nato summit in Madrid beginning on Tuesday.

Around 11am, there were at least several unconfirmed reports of two more explosions in Kyiv.

Russia will soon exhaust its combat capabilities, Western assessments predict

The Russian military will soon exhaust its combat capabilities and be forced to bring its offensive in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region to a grinding halt, according to Western intelligence predictions and military experts.

"There will come a time when the tiny advances Russia is making become unsustainable in light of the costs and they will need a significant pause to regenerate capability," said a senior Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue.

The assessments come despite continued Russian advances against outgunned Ukrainian forces, including the capture on Friday of the town of Severodonetsk, the biggest urban center taken by Russia in the east since launching the latest Donbas offensive nearly three months ago.

The Russians are now closing in on the adjacent city of Lysychank, on the opposite bank of the Donetsk river.

A very good way to increase the cohesion of G7 countries!????

Yes, of course Russia will "exhaust it's combat capabilities" right after they destroy UA and plunge the EU, including Germany into an energy crisis this winter.

E.U. leaders plan for a painful scenario: Russia turning off the gas.

Link for heading:

“Now it’s 12 member states that have either been totally cut off or partially,” she added.

Ms. von der Leyen said she would ask her experts to propose an emergency plan to tackle possible shortages going into the winter. The commission has already promoted joint purchasing and storing of gas by E.U. members as a safety measure, should one nation get disconnected. After gas supplies were cut off to Bulgaria, for example, Greece stepped up to help supply its neighbor and fellow E.U. member.

Russia controls the energy and food but does anyone even notice or are they too busy with spreading war propaganda?

"Gas is not the only urgent question facing world leaders. Diplomats also gathered in Berlin on Friday, ahead of a G-7 summit in Germany on Sunday, to discuss the growing global food crisis set off by the inability of Ukraine to export its grain. Earlier this week, the United Nations said that the war had pushed tens of millions of people into food insecurity."

Biden's proxy war is a brilliant strategy, if you want destruction, carnage, inflation, food shortages, etc as the norm.

Why, you don't believe me or more like you don't want to believe me? I am making a statement of my own, you can discuss, debunk, refute, agree or just move on, up to you.

How many lives need to be lost because of this proxy war against Putin? Putin is on the glide path, he's holding some chips:, food and energy. Sanctions are hurting Russia, but maybe more pain on the West, and for how much longer. The sooner this is over, the better, get it?

Ask yourself why Pearl Harbor happened.

Oh, and you know this how.....from CNN, MSNBC? Can you articulate your comment further?

Did perhaps Putin tell you this? You are letting propaganda lead you and shape your thoughts.

But your statement Russia will destroy Ukraine is a prediction. And given how previous predictions fared about how Russia was going to crush Ukraine, you might want to be a bit more circumspect in your outlook.

Putin wouldn't even believe you, he's been trying for 4 months already, still have to admire his new general in charge being shipped over....????

Obese retired Russian general, 67, sent to Ukraine as Putin runs low on commanders

General Pavel weighs 20 stone and is now aged 67 but has been put in charge of troops in eastern Ukraine because Vladimir Putin is running low on senior commanders

Sure, but hows it really looking as of today, where is the UA shout outs of kicking Putin out of UA? Where is all the discussion how Putin is sick, weak, cancer ridden dying, and all the talk about his military being run rough shod and the unsubstantiated, wild and absurd claims of military loses? It's not happening now, but UA is showing some chinks in their armor EVEN with 50 or $80B in western aid and armaments. It should be over for Putin, he's single-handedly fighting the west and all their military aid but the Ukrainian fighters have no victories to share with the western media now. Why is that?

easier said than done for so many reasons, not to mention the Geo-political fallout from this.

Nobody said it was easy but then freedom is never easy but will prevail over an evil dictator intent on expansion through war crimes

How do we know Putin isn't gravely ill?

What we do know is that despite the vast Russian superiority in materiel, they are making excruciatingly slow progress.

And your remark about Ukraine and
"chinks in their armor EVEN with 50 or $80B in western aid and armaments." is obviously ridiculous. Do I have to spell it out for you why that claim is ridiculous?

And maybe you weren't paying attention when Ukraine forces pushed Russians back from their attack on Kharkiv and progressed all the way to the Russian border? And they have been pushing back Russian troops in the Kherson region.

The western intelligence gathered a lot of information, including the date of invasion, while the Russians kept denying the possibility of it.

Ukraine's decisions are theirs to make, not yours, not mine, they are fighting for their homes, families and children and they will not stop nor will the west stop helping fortunately. A sovereign Ukraine will outlast Putin.

From Ukraine's Ministry of Defense yesterday:

This war will stop only when Ukraine wins.

Long since common knowledge. The Russians were trashed when they tried to assail Kyiv.

if they can win, w/o Biden they are dead in the water. Even with Biden and the west proxy war Putin will ratchet up his campaign and WHO KNOWS WHERE THIS GOES.

Russia has no practical way to to ratchet up anything.

But, the real damage is in the south and well, go check out Mariupol, is it still there?

You know that phrase "All dressed up and no place to go?" Well if Putin can't buy the chips and high tech machinery to create missiles and sophisticated aircraft, will Putin even be able to ratchet up his campaign?

Ask that question when Germany goes cold this winter when Putin closes the valves on the gas transmission lines and Germany scrambles to energize the country with coal or the nuke plants that are shut in.

They did very well without any help repelling the attempted invasion into Kiev. This is not about Biden alone, its about NATO, EU the UK along with other countries. Who knows where this goes? certainly not you that's for sure

A starving world with an energy crisis will get them scrambling like rats. But, should it progress this far, is that what you want to see?
