Chiang Mai Free Wireless Internet Wi-fi Hot Spots courtesy of Stickman

Chiang Mai Saloon

Loi Kroh Road.

Apparently it has good food and drink, free monkey nuts or popcorn and free wireless internet access. You can also check email free on the bar's single internet-connected PC.

Panthip Plaza

Chiang Mai City.

Chiang Mai's new computer shopping centre is just a couple of minutes walk from the Night Bazaar. There is free wi-fi access but not many convenient places to set up your laptop.

Charcoa Cafe

Chiang Mai City.

Sripoom Soi 1 in the old town, not exactly free, a 30 baht fee is charged for unlimited access.

Amora Hotel, Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai City.

You can connect to the unsecured wireless network by setting the IP address of 192.168.100.20-255, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and enter any known DNS server. This saves 600 baht per day.

Dragon Star, Cyber Café Pro

99/4 Ratchapakinai, 50200 Chiang Mai (that’s in the old city about 200m southwest of Thapae Gate).

It’s free in the sense that paying customers (the place includes a coffee shop) are free to access the net without charge. The place is run by a Danish guy, who used to be some kind of software specialist. Opening hours 9AM - 11 PM every day.

Viang Bua Mansion Serviced Apartments

Chiang Mai

The password is: abcde12344. It is meant for in room use, but it works also in the

lobby and on the terrace.

VIPA House

14-14/1 Loikroh Lane 1, just off Loikroh Road near Kotchasarn Road intersection

In lobby. SSID = linksys. Good speed, always on.

Prince Hotel

3 Taiwang Rd, Chiang Mai.

They have free Wi-Fi, 256 Kbps, which works in the lobby and pool area also.

Computer City Mall

Outer NW corner of the moat.

Good signal, waiting chairs in ground floor. Upper floor has chairs too, much less people

Duangtawan Hotel

Loi Kroh rd., between old town and river.

Open WLAN, weak signal, but mostly usable (tested in 11th floor of east wing). The *official* WLAN of that hotel costs 1 to 2 baht per minute depending on the amount of time you buy.

Good View Bar & Restaurant

On the river.

Has free wi-fi in very pleasant but conservative surroundings.

The Garden Chiang Mai Guesthouse

Ratchedamnon Road

Has free wi-fi for whoever drops in and has a meal or a drink.

The Pirates Cove/Cave(?)

Ratchamankha Road

Free wi-fi is offered and they also have glasses of white wine at just 50 baht a glass.

Central / Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Centre

That big shopping centre!

IT City has free access. You can relax in the food centre opposite the entrance of the computer shops.

Baan Yin Dee

100 Charoen Prathet Road, Muang, Chiang Mai 50100

Drinks at 45 baht & up. Free wi-fi in pleasant surroundings & music if you bring your laptop. They also have a desktop in the coffee shop.

Mad Dog

Moon Muang Rd, Chiang Mai.

Free wi-fi is offered now in this restaurant(?)

Cafe Mong Pearl

Chiang Mai.

Free, fast wi-fi and decent food and coffee. (A small, brewed, house coffee with free refill is only 25 baht!) Very comfortable, but small cafe. Not sure about hours, but not open late.

Mo'S coffee

Chiang Mai.

It's a sub-cafe of the connected, upscalish restaurant Mo'C Mo'L. This place is tucked just off the main road. Free wi-fi, although the connection can sometimes get bogged down with laptoppy college students. Coffee is not spectacular, but they also have cake, pie and smoothies. Not positive about current operating hours, but it used to be 10-10.

Talking about wi-fi; does anybody know why you can connect to the internet but not send emails.

My friends were staying in CM at the weekend and using it at their hotel, no problem. But emails would not go from their outbox.

I am guessing that they are using something like Outlook and not sending eMail from an Internet connect such as Hotmail. The email will stay in their outbox because it needs to have the settings changed to match the set up for the wireless connect.

Any information will be great

first of all, everyone, the OP is not asking for wi-fi of which donnyboy very kindly put the list out as. wonderful job though :o. excellent source of info for anyone looking for hot spots.

kitty, with that sierra card, i reckon getting a line with CAT CDMA would be the best way to go. I think its WCDMA, with speeds up to 1MBps? not sure but best if you check with CAT on the Superhighway next to the provincial police station.

AIS has Edge though and runs at approx 600baht per month unlimited. Worth checking that out as well.

Keep us posted on what you end up with.

you need to configure outlook for the correct smtp port. (ie outgoing mails). Some default port works in some countries, others dont. Best to contact the mail hosting provider for correct smtp port numbers.

Talking about wi-fi; does anybody know why you can connect to the internet but not send emails.

My friends were staying in CM at the weekend and using it at their hotel, no problem. But emails would not go from their outbox.

This is because most outgoing mailservers are set up to accept only connections from their own network. Like if you're on CS Internet then CS Internet runs an outgoing mailserver that accepts mail only from a CS Internet connection; otherwise the server would be abused by people on the internet to send spam.

The way around this is one of the following:

* Mostly the outgoing mail server DOES accept mail from different networks if you're authenticated with your regular username and password. This can be configured in your email software (Outlook, etc.)

* You could use a different outgoing mail server, though that would require you to change your account settings.

* You could forget about using a program like Outlook altogether but instead send email using Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoomail or anythign else that's web based. This is actually the easiest.

There is no such thing as 'free' wifi in Chiang Mai - unless you are a low cheater, of course. Those places, offering 'free' wifi only do it to boost sales - they aren't philanthropic establishments. Consider the 'free' offer to be included in the charges for what you buy at that place.

Stickman's list is a bit outdated. I know about at least one place on the list, that've stopped that offer due to the fact that the place soon saw all chairs occupied by low riders, who could spend 4-6 hours nursing a bottle of water, while surfing the web.

There is a used book shop in Bangkok on Sukumvit that got famous as he11 really quickly and initially it was mostly because it offers coffee and pastries for sale. For some reason all the trendy magazines thought that a bookstore/cafe was most chic'. It doesn't matter that the place is surrounded by much better cafes and coffee shops as it is close to the Emporium Shopping Center.

To me, it is a big waste of space on the main floor that could be filled with books and I don't think that I've ever seen anyone drinking coffee or eating his brownies.

The owner has his own blog and he often complains about the lowlifes that hang around his bookshop getting in the way and not buying anything. Several weeks ago he went on and on about how he will never have WI FI because it attracts all the types that he is trying to get rid of.

Live and learn. :o

So Kitty, what did you end up with?

I am on a free LAN (<deleted> ADSL) in my apt, but am thoroughly fed up with outages, slower-than-dialup speeds, etc.

As soon as I hear one good thing about ANY 3G/Edge/WCDMA network in CM that works reliably, is fast, and not too expensive, I'm on it.

BTW, to other posters, as TB correctly noted, we are not talking about Wi-Fi hotspots.

wizzardofoz- Cafe Mong Pearl. Start at NW corner of moat, Huay Kaew Rd. Head towards CMU. Cross Nimmenheimen, then Canal Rd.

Mong Pearl is right next to Lanna 3 apartment bldg on north side of HK Rd. You have to go past it, and make a u-turn at Milk Zone (divided road) to get back to it. Reliable hi-speed Wi-Fi.

I also recommend Chiang Mai Saloon on Loi Kroh Rd. for Wi-Fi if you need it.

May I suggest they (or you) send Stickman an email with something like 50-150 words, that can be easily copied/pasted into his website (that's how it works). Easy to get some competitions, you don't like, on that list.
