Daily News Thai Caption: Another arrest in "silencing" killing

Crime Suppression Division police announced the arrest of an alleged hired hitman who it is claimed assassinated   a motorcycle taxi rider in Pattaya two years ago.

Niphon Panthong, 47, was arrested on a warrant for conspiracy to murder and weapons offences issued on June 10th. He was taken into custody outside a bus garage in Bang Saray, Sattahip, Chonburi, eastern Thailand.

The case related to an incident on 28th July 2020 when taxi rider Prathum Sa-atnak, 47, was shot dead behind Muang Pattaya 8 school in Pattaya. ASEAN NOW (then Thaivisa) reported widely on the crime at the time.

A man called Manat Imnam, 41, was arrested along with Niphon at the time and they said that they had a personal disagreement with the rider, reported Daily News.

The relatives of Prathum believed this to be nonsense thinking instead that Prathum knew something about an illegal casino being operated by an influential figure on the eastern seaboard.

Later the relatives went to Pol Gen Suwat Changyodsuk, the RTP chief, who took the case out of the hands of the Pattaya police and gave it to the CSD which led to the arrest of the influential figure.

He is a man called Somchai Jutikidecha or more familiarly "Long Joo Somchai" aged 56.

He was charged with ordering the killing.

Niphon was initially arrested but released by the Pattaya police before the CSD got involved. Following their investigation they applied for a new arrest warrant to detain Niphon.
