If he is overstay, doesnt it mean his visa exempt or any stamp already expired?

I think he must leave the country and come back. I wouldnt go to the immigration.

To some extent, it depends on the immigration office. Most often, if the overstay is less than about five days, it is possible. A border bounce by land for a further visa exempt entry is also possible as long as the overstay is not more than a couple of weeks. Only a few selected land borders, or leaving via the airport, is possible with long overstays. One way or another, deal with the issue tomorrow.

Not saying this is the rule but I remember someone doing a covid extension while I was there and then he got called up and said he was on overstay and had to pay a fine. He paid the fine and got the extension, not sure if it will work in your case or not.

OP, your friend needs to act very quickly to use option of going to immigration to pay overstay days and obtain 30 day extension.

More than few days he should exit Thailand and pay overstay upon leaving.

With just a few days of overstay and an apologetic attitude, it's more likely than not that your friend would be able to obtain the extension after paying the overstay fine. Seen it many times.

Years ago, I overstayed my visa by 2 months. With great fear, I went to a Visa service and escorted their rep. down to immigration. A high ranking officer talked with the Rep. for a while, then gave me a thorough tongue lashing, putting the fear of God in me and my wife. I was allowed to extend my visa. A saving grace was the immigration officer dropped her jaw when she saw that I had just done my 90 day a month after my visa expired. The lady behind the counter at that time, never looked at my visa stamp. Turned out to be a mistake on their part as well as mine. Because of that, I was not charged fines. It pays to go to immigration up front and admit guilt. It pays further to have a visa Rep. From that point on, I pay visa service to do the work for me. Cost a chunk of money but all stress eliminated. For me that is money well spent.

Your situation was very different to OP.

Even with agent you were extremely lucky.

I am on a Covid extension. It was up on the 16th but I had it in my mind it was the 18th. When I went to prepare the afternoon of the 17th I realized I was over. I flew to Immigration very late in the afternoon. They acknowledged the overstay of one day at the front desk but I still went into queue. As the queue advanced I wasnt sure I would make it before closure and in fact I was the very last person in the office at the end of the day. They had me pay and sign for the fine. In the end they issued an under consideration stamp and I go back next week to get the extension.

I defer to others experience on a threshold for leniency but would advise to just make it correct as soon as possible for the best outcome.

As I understand if you are in queue with a queue ticket they always take care of you on that day even if you are called after official closing hours.
