Thailand's drug authorities have successfully intercepted a parcel that contained the powerful and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical drug fentanyl.

 

This drug - prescribed by doctor's for severe pain associated with cancer care - is abused with other drugs like heroin, morphine, cocaine and crystal meth to produced a great high.

 

This can be dangerous if overdosed as has been seen in many cases in the US and Europe.

 

Siam Rath reported comments from the secretary of the Narcotics Control Board Wanchai Chaimongkhol who appeared with far east DEA rep Mark Snyder at a press conference.

 

Wanchai said that the Airport Interdiction Task Force - AITF - had intercepted and xrayed a parcel from the US that contained 8 grams of ketamine, 9 grams of crystal meth, 2 grams of ecstasy, 10 grams of cocaine and four grams of fentanyl.

A US man who came to pick up the parcel was arrested. In follow up investigations in the Ratchathewi and Wattana areas of Bangkok a Thai woman was also taken into custody.

 

The drugs were found on Monday.

 

Investigators are looking into the case to see if it was one of personal use or part of a wider drug related issue. 

 

Wanchai said this was the first time fentanyl had been found and the NCB were keeping a close watch on what he said was a potentially dangerous drug coming into the kingdom.

 

Fentanyl comes in pill or patch form and online information suggests it has 50-100 times the power of morphine. 

 

Misuse can cause heart failure and death.

Surprised it being the first time.  In the US a lot of fentanyl comes in the US Mail from China.  Thailand is much closer to China ... maybe it is too expensive for Thailand.

You will know it when it is in Thailand from the overdoses . Actually fentanyl thrives where heroin is not so available as it is a cheap synthetic substitute. So Thailand should  not have any problems with fentanyl with the heroin availabllity due to its location.

It might be the first time the authorities have discovered it being smuggled in, but I'm sure it's already rife in Thailand, as you say, coming in from China.  If the DEA were involved I suspect they had a tip-off about the American involvement. 

They might or might not have interdicted it previously but there was huge bust in Myanmar a couple of years ago. I'd be surprised if it were all for Western markets or Australia.

Haven't found any yet.

I think there's definately been some around, whether it's been found or not. And worryingly its sold as cocaine. 

Hopefully after they have dealt with this US miscreant the authorities will arrest the Thai drug King pins as well.

Execution is necessary,

I have been prescribed Fentynal while in Bangkok Hospital but I did not find it any stronger than morphine.

I rejected it after one patch after looking it up I found that it killed the musician Tom Petty who had access to it just as he was preparing for his final tour, he overdosed on it.

RIP Tom....another Travelling Wilbury death.

Fentanyl is nasty stuff . In British Columbia Canada six people die every day from it, 1200 this year to date .If it comes to Thailand you will see the bodies pile up.

Mexico smuggles fentanyl into the US, but they get the drug or precursors from China.

I was on fentanyl for 2 weeks after a stroke. The high is very very mild but the pain relief is incredible. When they took me off it the pain was the issue not a high/trip of any kind. Its not like heroin (which I have never had but understand its "pro" is a trip?).

Mexico has replaced China. 

China has direct involvement introducing fentanyl to Afghan and Mexican producers of heroin to increase potency, marketability and profits. Fentanyl is available in/from China by mail. Four hundred dollars can generate profits of up to ten thousand dollars.  It is so potent that a few grains can be lethal. As posted earlier Vancouver and the province of British Columbia has been suffering the devasting effects of this drug for years.

Fentanyl will probably be included in yaa bah as it can be smoked and could make yaa bah more potent and profitable.

Definitely a drug Lord who would have destroyed miĺlions of lives with his evil cartel of 2 people.

Many years ago a mutual friend, an American guy, who we knew to be a heroin addict, asked an Irish friend if he could be the recipient of some kitchen-ware that was being sent by post to Bangkok, our Irish friend politely declined.

There should be a mandatory execution law, for anyone found pushing this garbage. No waiting period. Execution style. See ya!

The scourge of fentanyl is the post millennial rehashing of the then opioid derivative heroin as it smashed through urban cultures across the globe in the 80's n 90's.

We can thank a nice Belgian pharmaceutical company for this synthetic opioid and the deregulated production houses in China where many of the worlds counterfeit/copycat drug production comes from.

I stop short of the conspiratorial rightist narratives that China, Mexico and other dark forces colluding across the globe to destroy America and other western nations by producing such drugs.

Its simply a matter of making money and lots of it rather than some terrible Communist, leftist plot to destroy the 'shining, glorious; (?) white races.

We don't have the same prescription drug abuse as the US.

Well I have used it  but only once when I was in BK Hospital CM

 

But after I was given the patch I googled it and refused any more.
