BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has joined the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77) in New York City as part of its post-pandemic rebuilding efforts, with the aim of promoting its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to Eksiri Pintaruchi, Director-General of the Department of International Organisation, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudvinai and a team of Thai officials are currently attending the September 17–25 meeting.

With the theme of this year’s session being "A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges," Eksiri said Thailand planned to present four objectives for discussion, the first of which was a proposal to host the next summit in person after a two-year absence due to the pandemic.

Thailand would prioritize international cooperation, especially in the face of global difficulties such as political conflicts, economic crises and other catastrophes, as well as highlight its position as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) host by presenting the outcomes of different meetings held in Thailand to date.

Eksiri noted that the kingdom will also announce its bid for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2025–2027 during the summit.

Don and the Thai delegation are scheduled to attend at least ten official meetings and co-chair a number of others to discuss mental health and education, the universal health care scheme, ASEAN, Thailand’s SDGs plan, the promotion of the sufficiency economy philosophy, and the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model.
