Let us talk about the implications of Extending a Non-O-Visa or Extending for Retirement both via an Income letter not in terms of technicality (how to apply, border runs, cost, etc. etc.), but in terms of money in the Thai bank itself, monthly money to be transferred respectively to be used if ever.

After reading some posts the last 10 days, it seems to me that immigration wants us Isaan oldies to literally burn 65K per month, whereas this part of the land offers a cheaper lifestyle and maybe others do agree that spending that amount up here is quite a task.

Although I am not worried about myself for the next 2 years, if the law remains as it is, I open this thread to discuss and learn what others think would be the best choice. Thank you.

I have seen no requirement for spending 65k being asked as general policy from any office. The new post from Phuket which asks that an account be available for inspection does not mention any such requirement. As long as there is something to indicate you can survive do not believe anyone will have a problem.

Sorry, maybe I was not precise enough in my wording and therefore take this matter a little bit further.

How in fact is an income letter handled by immigration? Don’t they look into what is coming in into a Thai bank account and what goes out of it?

I know of a case where the Embassy Income letter states an income of 65k according the official supporting documents from the country the applicant is a citizen from. However, the effective inflow of money into Thailand is short of 65k, because part of that money goes straight to child support back home.

Does that have any effect on either a Non-O-Extension or an Extension for Retirement?

The requirement is 65k gross income - there is no requirement for any specific transfers into Thailand. All they will want to see with bank paperwork (if they even ask) is indication that you have the funds needed to support yourself.

There is always the "other" clause so when we hear of an additional request we should not assume this applies to everyone, or even anyone other than the specific person until we have additional reports that suggest it might.

I could EASILY spend a hel_l of a lot more than that. Lets not give immigration ideas. I am sure there are those who have 65k gross but not 65k disposable income, after tax, maintenace payments for ex-wife/children. Heaven forbid but there may even be those who perjure themselves by claiming to their embassy they have 65k.
