Video: Dramatic moment as man with yaba tries to flee police by stealing the taxi

Dramatic CCTV footage from a checkpoint in Phrae, northern Thailand, showed the moment a passenger in a taxi tried to steal the cab and flee police. 

 

Huay Rai cops had pulled over the cab to check for drugs and the driver had got out.

 

But at that moment the passenger jumped into the driver's seat and tried to close the door and drive off.

 

The driver managed to pull the key out of the ignition and the police soon had the passenger in custody despite further attempts to flee.

 

He was Isara or "Tor" (surname withheld), a 35 year old man from Pattani in the far south.

In a black backpack the police found about 40,000 yaba tablets. These are meth mixed with caffeine, a popular Class 1 drug in Thailand. 

 

He was charged with possessing the drubs with intent to sell as well as taking yaba. 

 

He said he had picked up the drugs from Lampang and was taking them to Bangkok.

 

Police are expanding the inquiry. The incident occurred on Sunday but has only just come to the attention of Thai Rath.
