A Warning Note From Neighbors

The following note was put in my mailbox, exactly like this, in English:

TO THE OWNERS OF THE AGRESSIVE BARKING DOGS,

IF YOU DO NOT KEEP YOU PSYCHOTIC ANIMALS QUIET (ARE THEY NASTY BECAUSE YOU ARE CRUEL TO THEM?) AT LEAST BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 10 PM TO 9 AM THEN WE WLL BE FORCED TO CONTACT THE AUTHORITIES, TO HAVE THEM PERMANENTLY REMOVED. THIS IS YOUR FIRST, LAST WARNING!!

So, as you can see, this was not signed by anyone, but my housekeeper saw a worker from the guesthouse across the soi come and put it in my box. I was also on vacation at this time, and it was over a month ago, but my housekeeper gave it to my boyfriend, and they decided to keep it a secret from me until the other day.

I live on a very long, thin soi, that is all residential, expcept for the stupid cheap guesthouse next to me, and they make all the noise on the street other than we have a lot of traffic because many people use it as a shortcut from one main road to another. However, re my dogs, I have one giant breed dog who is mostly always outside, but all my dogs are inside my fence, and he doesn't even bark one time per day, and when he barks it is one bark, not a series of barks. I have two mix breed toy dogs that are outside about 2- 4 hours a day, that bark sometimes, usually when other dogs walk by, or when people stop at my fence to try to play with them, look at them, etc.

The guesthouse, which charges 80 to 100 baht a night, has a pool table right on the edge of the road, and a bar, and makes noise all night long, but not during the hot season, because they don't have any customers. During the cool season, when I don't have aircon on, and have windows open, and they are closer to me then certain rooms of my house, they are playing pool all night, have drunks yelling, have bar girls, have tuk-tuks pulling in and out at all hours, have loud motorbikes, etc, and nobody ever complains, as well as they play movies on a large screen TV and blast music.

My house, which rents for 35,000 baht, has a few nice, trained, normal dogs who only bark at normal things during normal hours, and someone is here 24 hours a day, so I know what goes on here. I have a fulltime housekeeper who cleans everything and keeps things nice. There isn't even poo in my yard for more than an hour at a time.

My Thai b/f misunderstood the note, thought it said that they were "going to have us removed" and freaked out and went over there with his gun and told him that we were not going anywhere, that he would have his police and soldier friends come over here and take care of them, blah, blah, blah, and that if they thought "our dogs where psychotic" there were about to see him go "psychotic".

Anyway, they said it was a farang guest who wrote the note, and not them. Of course I cannot believe this, that some poor farang would write a note like this, rather than just change rooms. I think they got one of their guests to write the note in English so they could say they didn't do it, and as well, they delivered it?? but who knows. And the threat of getting rid of my dogs forever, since this can't be done here, makes me think they are telling me they will poison them. Since there are also no "authorities to call" and also, since my dogs don't bark all night, and hardly bark at all, this is rather strange. But it is making me rather angry and making me want to go burn down that freaking pool table as this is so strange for them to make all the noise in the area and then complain about a dog!!! So I am wondering what others think??

tell them (write them a note?) that if anything happens to your aniamls they will be held responsible. maybe flash the gun around a few times. also on holidays i'd start firing shots in the air etc, make sure they know you have bullets and know how to hand weapons.

The note sounds like a psyco and a punk because they didn't sign it or come to talk to you in person.

I've had many dogs and really love animals especially German shepards.

Unfortonately it is Thailand and no one would really care if he hurt or killed your dogs.

I would offer the worker that brought the note 1000 bhat to rat the guy out then give a few of the locals a 1000 baht each and a bottle of Mekong each to "give this AH some religion."

Case closed.

Remember it's Thailand, a few thousand bhat will solve your problem in a situation like this...

I think your friend was barking up the wrong tree when he threatened them. Neighbours tend to be more tolerant if things are cordial. It may be possible to salvage things if you and your bf go over and discuss things (and your bf apologises for his threats - pointing out the misunderstanding) and you try to establish cordial relationships. Then drop in from time to time for a drink or two and make a point of saying hello.

I wouldn't t rule out it being some dog hating farang who was barked at when he passed your house and decided to get nasty and write a threatening note. He is probably long gone.

If it was the owners, then probably your boyfriend's counter threats have done the trick.

My advice to you is to keep cool and see if there is any more trouble from that quarter. Hopefully it will all blow over.

Tell your maid to keep an eye on the dogs when they are in the yard, and keep a look out for any food that may be thrown in for them. If she is clearing the poo away, she should spot any strange food.

I hope there will not be a repeat occurrence.

Maybe the writer of the note didn't want to give a name as he or she knows your boyfriend, and I don't blame them judging by his response. As a side note, a Thai friend of mine was shot dead on the spot when he complained to a neighbour about the unpleasant mess this guy's dog had left outsice his front gate. Yes depending upon the actual confrontation (eg did he actually produce the gun to the guesthouse owner?), moving may indeed be the healthy option if a peace offering either won't work or, in the circumstances, is not an option. As it stands, your mini cold war could heat up at any time.

I read it to mean that the BF flipped when he read the message, not when it was shown to the OP. In other words the OP is recounting something that had already happened a month ago, when she was on holiday which is why I counselled a 'wait and see if it all blows over' approach,

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if it was a farang. I have seen drunken farang walking and start barking at dogs which are in their own properties. Just to make it clear the farang barked first and then the dogs, looked pretty funny.

Okay Bendix, and those others out there saying the sky is falling ... I understand that based on western standards my b/f's reactions sounds like too much ... but maybe I should explain better, except then I get complaints for writing too much ... my b/f did go over and show them his gun, he did threaten to use his "power" but he does happen to have a good amount to power here and the Thai guys who work next door know this, and don't have power here (hence the anonymous note, they did or did not write but left, and the dogs are still alive, and in the last month they have been bending over backwards to be nice to us).

However, I find it so strange because the note was not really the Thai way to handle things but not really the farang way, especially for a hotel guest, either, but somewhere in the middle in my opinion were maybe two people (a farang and a Thai) got together and the whole plan got out of hand?? I mean I farang might be direct about it but would not be so rude and insulting based on nothing. And based on nothing they are really invested in, i.e. a short stay in a guest house wouldn't wind one up so much about noise as a long term lease on a house as I might be towards their noise would it? And the noise they are angry about seems to be a fantasy as well. Once in a while there are other dogs that bark at night, that are NOT my dogs, maybe they mistake as my dogs, but they are not all night, and not every night!

However, my b/f didn't just go over and say he was going to shoot them with his gun, he showed them his gun, he showed them he has a permit for his gun, he said nobody better try to mess with him when he comes in at night at the gate because he has this gun ready, and if this so "called farang" wants to remove us from our house he will protect us, etc. And that he will call his police and soldier and lawyer friends right now to come talk to this "farang" who has the problem with us or anyone else, etc, etc. Even though my b/f had a good idea it was not a farang guest but the guest house guys who were the people we should be worried about. CM is not a very large town and my b/f is a pretty well known person here so what he said was known before we moved into this housei.e. that he has some powerful friends (not to sound like an idiot but this seems to be important in Thailand when you are Thai.) You can also try to understand that he thought someone wrote that they were going to remove us from our house and that is a pretty serious threat in Thailand.

He also had one local mafia person come talk to them and tell them that nothing better happen to me and warning them that he didn't want to tell me because sometimes I am crazy and he didn't know what I would do if I found out about it. And I have to say now that I know about it I am finding it hard to control myself because I cannot believe the rudeness and unfairness of it all and how nice I have been to these jerks in spite of all the noise they make. And for those of you who read my story where I faked that I had a gun in order to protect myself from having to move out of a previous house, and it worked, you can see that is what Thai people do I guess, and this is furhter proof that I did the right thing. And I can tell you that I still see that person I fought with, I ran into him two times this month and we are rather friendly now. I am glad I can make some of you feel like you life is going great, maybe that is my purpose to be here.

Anyway, we are all moving soon because I bought a house. Just waiting to pay the taxes, do some repairs, do the acutual move, and I paid a year's rent in advance so there was no rush.

I was on vacation, then note came, my maid saw it arrive and got it, it was in English, gave it to my b/f when we got back, he went right over to the g/h and freaked out. I found out about it yesterday more than a month later.

Seems like your writing a soap opera, its just one episode after the next.

I think unless you were living in cambodia then maybe your boyfriends reaction would be normal but for Chiang Mai I think most people will agree that getting guns out over a note who you dont know who wrote is taking things way too far.

If your life is actually for real I think I should make a documentary about you, its gonna be one hel_l of a bestseller!!

I'm pretty sure it was not the guesthouse who sent the note. Thais probably would not give you a warning , with or without the aid of a farang. Probably an ###### farang guest, who has since moved on. I don't think you're in any immediate danger. I'd look to move to a less populated area.

Oh MY GOD, Please save it, all of you who think I would waste my time making up stories for this website. If my stories are so great and I was making them up, then I guess I would just write a book. Maybe you guys need to get out and get a life if nothing ever happens to you because I live like a hermit basically and enough crap seems to happen to me.
