The average Thai is not very good at thinking ahead, their immediate priority is only to get across the junction, what will happen if they're stuck in a traffic jam on the actual line when the barriers come down seldom enters their heads. A few weeks ago at lunchtime, I was on that Khao Talo crossing and the roads were jammed in all directions, but I refused to advance onto the railway line until the cars in front of me had moved so that I could get safely across the railway. I had some fool in a tiny Suzuki Swift behind me trying to tailgate me to force me to move forwards, while two idiots on motorbikes went past me indicating that I should move onto the railway line. I ignored them all until it was safe to drive across. They need to run some TV adverts showing the horrible consequences of getting stuck on a railway line when a train goes through at speed, or include actual videos as part of the driving licence tests, like they do with car accidents on the Defensive Driving courses. OK, so it was a farang in this case, but I've never had a foreigner try to coerce me onto the railway tracks, so far it's only been Thais, but one of these days it'll probably happen, lol.
