BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has confirmed it is prepared to back efforts by Timor-Leste to gain full membership into the ASEAN bloc as its 11th member.

The announcement was made by Acting Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, who said Prime Minister Prayut Gen Chan-O-Cha was pleased to facilitate the admission of Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN.

On November 11, ASEAN leaders agreed in principle to admit Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, as the bloc’s newest member.

This would enable the nation to take part in ASEAN meetings, including summit plenaries.

This year’s ASEAN summit concluded in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on Sunday (13 Nov).

The spokesperson added that an objective, criteria-based roadmap for Timor-Leste’s admittance is set to be formalized, with all 10 ASEAN member states and partners ready to provide any support that may be required.
