TAT says tourism this year will be livelier than last year

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expresses confidence that Thai tourism during the high season will be livelier than last year's. The TAT hopes to generate more than 500 billion baht this year. The tourism body attributes the increasing number of inbound tourists mainly due to the celebrations of His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday anniversary.

TAT Governor Pornsiri Manoharn (พรศิริ มโนหาญ) affirms Thailand’s high capacity in tourism contributes to the overall economy. During the previous year, there were about 13.8 tourists visiting the country, or a 20% increase from 2005, and TAT expects that the total number of tourists this year will stay at about 14.8 millions. However, the governor reports that the number of tourists during the first three months of 2007 was only at 3.8 millions which is below the target figure.

Mrs Pornsiri says she believes that the number of tourists during the third and fourth quarters will increase due to TAT’s campaigns among Middle-eastern people on tourism in Thailand. The governor also expects that more European tourists will travel to the country during the second half of this year.

TAT hopes to ..... be in a position one day to cease including long-term visa-run entries in official tourism statistics and reveal true tourist numbers in the annual statistics! :o

UnF-ingbelievable.

In case she forgot, those lovely middle eastern countries take a very dim view of Bhudism and its adherents. Does she think they will be arriving to share love with the infidels? Maybe she should tune into Al Jazeera for an hour or two.

I nearly peed myself laughing when I read the last news release about the intent to promote tourism between Iran and Thailand. That will be a big hit with the locals. I can see the news pictures now - hundreds of burqa clad women in the bars pawing at go-go boys while their husbands are off drinking Mekong Whiskey

She should also pick up a European newspaper and read the European government foreign affairs websites. Between the news reports of the troublemakers in the south, the real and imagined political fallout from the coup and the travel warnings/advisories issued by foreign governments, she has a major tourism crisis brewing.

She'd be better off providing demonstrable reassurances about safety and solidifying her volatile Scandanavian and American tourist base.
