Thai Rath reported that a woman aged about 30 had been found dead wrapped in cloth and weighed down by a pump tied to her in a pond in Ang Thong sub-district of Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khirikhan, south central Thailand.

Police said initially that a Bang Saphan man who lives just 50 meters away was being interviewed as part of their inquiry.

Jaran Meunnin said that the victim was his niece Suphaporn "Pek" Meunnin.

He recognised a back tattoo on the decomposing body.

Relatives had reported her missing two weeks ago.

An autopsy and DNA analysis was being carried out to confirm the victim's identity.

In a later report it was stated that several people including a cousin were saying that it was not murder.

They claimed that the victim overdosed on drugs and died and fearing problems they disposed of the body.

This after one man involved had told the mother of the victim that she was bound to turn up soon.

Police doubt these stories as the investigation continues into what Thai Rath originally called a "cruel murder".

More likely they did not want to pay the funeral expenses !

I think not. A funeral is very rarely a financial burden unless you go overboard with the time spent eating and what you have on the menu plus drinking before the ceremony. The money collected from everyone even the poorest leaves the next of kin in profit.

What problems.. if she overdosed then the doctors report would support that and a normal burial/cremation would ensue.

Wrapped in a cloth, tied to a heavy pump and thrown into a pond is very iffy.

I guess he got that correct on 2 points.  She was bound and turned up a couple of weeks later.
