BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to preside over a ceremony at Suvarnabhumi airport on Saturday (Dec 10) to welcome the 10 millionth visitor of the year and mark Thailand’s milestone in achieving its tourism goal.

According to a report, the premier will personally greet the 10 millionth passenger arriving on a flight from Saudi Arabia. The gesture is part of the "Amazing Thailand 10 Million Celebrations" event organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to celebrate the country’s achievement of its visitor arrivals goal for the year.

Following the country’s borders reopening earlier this year, coupled with the lifting of strict health measures against Covid-19, TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the tourism industry has been steadily gaining momentum.

From January to December 5, Yuthasak stated that 9.78 million tourists arrived in the kingdom.

He noted that this is evidence of the country’s success in reviving its tourism industry, one of the most important industries in the kingdom.

The Amazing Thailand 10 Million Celebrations event — also held at Don Mueang, U-Tapao, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Samui airports, as well as border checkpoints in Nong Khai and Sadao in Songkhla — is a way of thanking tourists from around the world for visiting Thailand and demonstrating their trust in the country’s tourism industry.

A fantastic irony, that the ultimate coward, who invented the PDT (Prayuth decimation of tourism), and nearly single handedly destroyed a huge and valuable industry, epmloyjg millions at its peak, is now presiding over the recovery.

Well, well, the fortune tellers at work again.

The circus knows now already, that tomorrow on a flight from Saudi Arabia the ten millionth tourist arrives. I query this irrelevant number (which serves to please the ignorants as a pre-election populistic statement) as I am shuttling back and forth across the Mekong from Nong Khai to Thanaleng. Some days the Thai immigration wants a TM6, some days not. Planeloads of aliens arriviing daily by air without any TM6 so how on Earth do they count the tourists.

But as said, it is yet another smoke screen covering utter self-profiling incompetence; hotels remain below 10% occupancy; the long weekend (the private industry thanks for the ongoing increase of public holidays) hikes exempted.

A few days back they announced that probably this year they would reach the 10 million, and now several days later it is already party. But who is checking the real numbers?? It must look good, but maybe the 10 million visitor is a friend of someone and is not really the 10th million but maybe the 8 976,543.... We will never know the truth

True

our family of 4 has arrived BKK 3 times this year & we live here.

So yes, airport tax has been paid. but not tourism count...

This recovery you speak of will be terribly slow to manifest or non existence.

Just from personal everyday observations, things will never come close to what they once were - as it was all quite devastating to this "valuable industry".

Yet, hope springs eternal - local business ways [nothing whatsoever to do with trickle down tourism] are recovering and thriving quite well, just in the last year.

So, is it the 10 millionth Tourist or the 10 millionth Arrival. Big  difference, Answers (on a postcard please) to TAT, LOS.

Shows the desperation and reliance on tourism when the PM goes to the airport to thank a backpacker.

I hope the tourist snubs him.

You are absolutely correct. It is going to take years. Sheer timidity can be a very destructive force. And much of the nightlife that tourists have an interest in was sabotaged by puritanical simpletons.

That would be a fun thing to witness. In my country you are not considered a legitimate leader. Why would I want to shake your hand? Or even meet you? You are an irrelevant man.

Perhaps. Yet, in your country an overwhelming percentage don't have a clue to whowhat he is nor could find Thailand on a map.

Just saying.

Works the other way around too. Our loud mouth mid aged overweight lady boy knows everything.

He's adamant that the country immediately above Thailand is Germany.

Showed him where Germany is on a good sized globe of the world and a good atlas, everything in Thai and English.

He demands the globe and atlas maps are wrong.

This all came about when he announced he was going to Germany to work as a massage boy (he's 47 years old and fat). His friend got some ticket prices, he inists the fares must be wrong because it's only 1.5 hr flight Bkk to Germany.
