BANGKOK (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is working towards collaboration between Thai and South Korean broadcast operators to elevate the potential of Thai television programs and promote soft power internationally.

Pirongrong Ramasoota, a board member of the NBTC, stated that the NBTC has held talks with South Korea’s Content Wavve company on possible cooperation to enhance Thai TV production. The South Korean media operator is a joint venture between Korean terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, MBC, and SBS) and Korean telco (SKT).

According to Pirongrong, Content Wavve’s representatives are scheduled to participate in a media seminar in Thailand next month, which aims to stimulate partnerships between Thai and South Korean media operators.

The NBTC board member expressed confidence in Thailand having the potential to produce content that showcases Thai culture to an international audience, stressing that this cooperation would help address this objective.

The NBTC is now working on a regulation that will allow it to provide financial support for programs deemed helpful to society or for operators who implement measures to protect the disabled or the underprivileged, which is in line with Section 52 of the Broadcasting Business Act. The draft regulation is expected to be finished in early 2023 before being brought to a public hearing the same year.
