Thai Rath had a story about a herd of 100 wild elephants that have been foraging away from the confines of the Ang Rue Nai sanctuary in central/eastern Thailand.

The animals have been causing big trouble by leaving the park area and feasting on sugar cane (Oi in Thai) and cassava fields.

This occurred in Tha Chang sub- district of Prachinburi.

Locals had to get together to push the herd back towards the sanctuary but acknowledged it was a hopeless task.

The animals needed food and they would be back. It was an impossible situation with no long term solution in sight.

The locals want more help from the authorities to help in protecting their crops that are well outside the area of the sanctuary.

A real elephant management programme is obviously required.
