Malaysian PM will do “whatever is required” to facilitate peace in Thailand’s South

Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to support Thailand in finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing insurgency in the Deep South.

The conflict, which has resulted in over 7,300 deaths since 2004, is being fought between Thai forces and separatist groups seeking independence for the predominantly Muslim and ethnically Malay provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and parts of Songkhla.

Speaking on a visit to Bangkok yesterday, PM Anwar stated that although the insurgency is an internal issue for Thailand, Malaysia is willing to assist in finding a peaceful resolution. He emphasised the importance of both countries working together to address the issue.

“It is our duty as good neighbours and family to do whatever is required and necessary to facilitate the process.”

For his part Thai PM Prayuth Chan-o-cha has welcomed the cooperation, saying it will help address tensions in the affected provinces through greater economic development and improved connectivity between both countries. The main insurgency group involved in talks with the Thai government, the Barisan Revolusi Nasional, did not comment on the visit.

Malaysia has played a role in facilitating peace talks between the separatists and the Thai government since 2013, though the process has been disrupted at times. Talks resumed again last year, following a two-year hiatus as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Considering Thailand isn't really looking for a peaceful solution then best of luck.

Oh if only Malaysia didn't give terrorists a safe Haven.

Those terrorists being the Thai military?

With UK permission, Thailand invaded The Kingdom of Patani and subjugated its Malay Muslim population to Buddhist governance.

Since when is one's country The Kingdom of Patani not a safe Haven for its citizens?

Do you have  link to that claim ?

About the UK giving permission ?

Ok, then he can start by collecting his own people that does not understand the ways of their own religion and re-educate them.  Good luck Sir!

About the UK giving permission ?

In the 1700-1900's "superpowers" UK and France contested each other over control of Southeast Asian countries. While The Kingdom of Siam seemed unaffected to both countries foreign Asian dominance policies, it played the two powers against each other to remain sovereign. However, Siam seemed to favor UK diplomatically and militarily with trade and territory concessions in exchange for State advantages.

from Wikipedia: Anglo- Siamese Treaty of 1909

                             (start)

In 1826 UK and KS signed the Burney Treaty that AFFIRMED British consent that Muslim kingdoms (caliphates) on KS southern border, including Kingdom of Patani, were Thai provinces. In exchange UK got exclusive trade deals with KS. In parts of that region.

In 1909 the UK and KS signed a treaty wherein the Kingdom of Patani remained under KS control.

                               (end)

In the pre-history to 1800's KP's sovereignty was recognized by the KS Court in exchange for tribute. But that eventually devolved into direct invasion by KS.

You're talking about a hundred years ago. I am talking about today, when people blow stuff up and run across the border.
